Why Denise Brown Went Back to Oprah

denise-brown-headshot.jpgEarly this morning, I got an email from Denise Brown (left), explaining why she'll be appearing on Oprah today after announcing last month she would not appear with Fred and Kim Goldman to discuss If I Did It, amplifying a brief statement on her blog. "[Oprah Winfrey] personally called to let me know she would not have done a show with the Goldmans had I not said yes originally," Brown wrote in her email. She says she told the talk show host that appearing on the show would be pointless since the Goldmans had already moved up the publication date of the book, demonstrating that it would be impossible to dissuade them from publishing.

"She understood and then proceeded to tell me that Nicole doesn't have a voice on the show," Brown adds, "that Marcia Clark, Chris Darden and Dominick Dunne via satellite are going on with the Goldmans. My initial reaction was what do those people have to do with the Civil Trial? NOTHING. I was pissed. I felt like I was pushed into a place that I didn't want to be but I could not, not be there for Nicole. Oprah was nice and she asked me if I read the book or will I be buying it and I said NO. I asked her the same questions and she also said NO. That was worth a million bucks."

(To play devil's advocate, though, if just for a moment, one does wonder how long it's been since Oprah Winfrey actually paid for a book out of her own pocket anyway. But I understand where Brown is coming from; even just by having the Goldmans on, even if she doesn't explicitly recommend it, Winfrey is lending the book a certain imprimatur.)

The show airs later today—actually, it might be on in Chicago right now, now that I think of it—but I'm taking the GalleyCat Army to the vet for their annual checkup this afternoon, so if I have anything to say, it'll be tomorrow.
