Catnip-Fueled Cat Recites Kubla Kat Poem

Following on the success of I Could Pee on This: And Other Poems By Cats, Chronicle Books will publish I Could Chew on This and Other Poems by Dogs in September.

In the video embedded below, a real life galley cat eats some potent catnip and reads the trippy “Kubla Kat” poem from I Could Pee on This.

Both poetry collections were written by Francesco Marciuliano, the storyteller behind the syndicated Sally Forth comic strip. Tom Racine animated and read the poem.

Catnip Madness!

Does your galley cat have a catnip problem? In the bombastic documentary style of anti-drug movies like Reefer Madness, Catnip: Egress To Oblivion? takes a sensational look at cats’ favorite herb.

The short film concludes with a cat pawing through a collection imaginary psychedelic books like “Catnip: The Ultimate Mind-Expanding Drug,” “The Catnip Experience,” or “Catnip Busters.” We’ve embedded the short film above, one of 12 free Sundance Film Festival films screening for free on YouTube.

Social Times has more about the Sundance shorts: “The 2013 Sundance Film Festival kicks off today, and for those of us that couldn’t make it to Park City, Utah to watch all the films live, YouTube is offering 12 of the 65 short films selected on the Screening Room YouTube channel.”

Author Kristen Britain sent that photograph: “This is Watson, my 17 week old Siberian Cat kitten. Perhaps he’ll become a word cat through osmosis? His godmother is my Hugo-Award winning editor at DAW Books, Betsy Wollheim. (I am the author of the Green Rider series for DAW.) Watson has been a joy, and even Gryphon the Irish Terrier sorta likes him.”

Blind Cat Wins Best Cat Video of the Year Award

A blind cat named Oskar won the best cat video of the year award from Friskies. This adorable and inspiring galley cat has a website, a store and a Facebook page, but he doesn’t have a book deal yet.

SocialTimes has more: “The grand prize winner of The Friskies Awards was none other than Oskar, an adorable little blind cat playing with a green ball. Oskar the cat has his own Facebook page with nearly 90,000 likes, his own website, and now his owners have $15,000 to spend on toys and catnip for him and his big cat brother Klaus.”

Friskies launched The Friskies earlier this year, generating 1,400 cat video submissions. Readers voted on the winner, giving the video embedded above the $15,000 grand prize.

Lord of the Fleas?

What if Eric Carle had written his famous kid’s book about A Very Hungry Cat?

Over at Abe Books, a satirical essay reimagined the covers of 18 popular books to feature cats.

These cats now grace the covers of A Tale of Two Kitties (Charles Dickens‘ A Tale of Two Cities), Lord of the Fleas (William Golding‘s Lord of the Flies) and The Girl with the Kitten Tattoo (Stieg Larsson‘s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). What other books could use this theme?

Everybody could use novelist Alan Goldsher‘s editing cat in their lives. He writes: “Here’s my cat Moto helping me edit my latest novel. He’s a fine editor, except his lack of opposable thumbs make it difficult for him to write down notes.”

Avalon Travel Publishing & Seal Press online marketing manager Jen Rios-Burns shared that photo: “Attached is a photo of my 5-year-old dachshund, Churro, who envisions himself as a true Wiener Wolf. The author, Jeff Crosby, even signed this copy for him when he visited BookPeople in Austin, TX.”

Welcome to the final installment of our annual pet parade, a holiday display of literary pets around the globe. GalleyCat readers have sent in pictures all week–the largest response we’ve ever received to the pet parade. Look for more pet pictures all week.

Hal Leonard Performing Arts publicity and marketing manager Diane Levinson sent that photo of Boomer the GalleyCat: “When Diane works at home (which she does a couple of days a week), Boomer loves to sit on the bench cushion right next to the computer where he can keep an eye on what she’s up to and occasionally ask for a belly rub. In this pic, taken a few weeks ago, he’s hanging out next to some current books Diane is working on—The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, December 8: 1980, and Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas–plus the all-important synonym finder.”

Editor Vicki Gundrum sent the excellent picture embedded above, here’s more: “Diva is my first reader on everything I write. She has an especially good ear for dialog but can get carried away and insert small rodent McGuffins as plot twists. These I dispatch. Here I’ve caught her messing with the original manuscript. She really needs to start writing her own books.”
