The Art of Pinterest Fiction

Aspiring novelist Tiffany Beveridge has created a Pinterest board collecting photographs of fashionably dressed hipster children, turning kiddie fashion shoots into a sprawling story about “My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler Daughter.”

Beveridge writes short short stories for these pictures, imagining the life of a toddler named Quinoa–these ironic captions will make you laugh out loud. Here’s one of our favorite examples:

One time when Quinoa and I got separated in a busy train station, she thankfully remembered our safety training: stay in one place, look spectacular, and don’t talk to poor people.

What Writers & Publishers Need To Know About Pinterest

SocialTimes editor Devon Glenn shared some surprising Pinterest facts on today’s edition of the Morning Media Menu. She also talked about a special font to help people with dyslexia read online and how Twitter has changed NASA’s communications department.

Here’s more from SocialTimes:

70% of the clicks happen within the first 2 days of a pin’s lifespan on Pinterest. The remaining 30% of the clicks extend to 30 days after the pin is posted and beyond. Piquora advises brands to have a plan for removing old pages or handling products that go out of stock. 11% of all the pins on Pinterest come from Tumblr … Pinners place 95% of their pins into boards named after categories such as fashion, accessories, beauty, and furniture.

Pinterest Promotion Tips for Writers

Do your readers love Pinterest? Maybe you should host a Pinterest giveaway or contest.

Over at SocialTimes, you can find some useful and specific advice for making the best Pinterest promotion possible. Here’s one great tip:

First, make sure there’s a good prize involved. Zap2It, a TV, movie, and celebrity fan site, asked contestants to repin 3 or more of their favorite pins from the “Best TV of 2012″ board. The prizes were a $500 gift card for the winner and five $100 gift cards for the runners up. Fresh Express, on the other hand, gave away a $1 coupon and asked for a lot in return — they wanted contestants to provide all of the above activities, plus create a recipe using the product and use two very long hashtags on each pin.

Pinterest Marketing Ideas from the Pros

Pinterest now counts 11.7 million unique users, and one BEA panel helped writers learn how to use the site for book promotion.

At a BEA, KMS Public Relations president Kathleen Schmidt moderated a “Pin it on Pinterest: Driving Traffic to Your Brand” panel. The experts included Wall Street Journal pop culture reporter Katherine Rosman, Book Riot executive editor Bethanne Patrick and Book Riot community manager Rebecca Schinsky.

During the presentation, Rosman recalled how she met the founders of Pinterest when they were working out of a small Palo Alto apartment last August. Since those humble beginnings, this photo-sharing site has risen the ranks and become the third most popular social media platform in America.
