Lisa Simpson Gets Book Club on Tumblr

Ever wish you could read like a cartoon character? The Lisa Simpson Book Club Tumblr blog has been collecting the many book references made by Lisa on the long running cartoon, The Simpsons.

The inspiring (and funny) reading list collects references to everybody from Danielle Steele to Lillian Hellman to Joyce Carol Oates. Above, we’ve embedded a Scrabble scene from the early days of the cartoon show to illustrate Lisa’s well-read personality.

Here is a particularly funny quote from the show: “Well, I think we should invest in a set of The Great Books Of Western Civilization. Look at this ad from The New Republic For Kids: Each month, a new classic will be delivered to our door. Paradise Regained, Martin Cheselwitt or Herman Melville’s twin-classics Omoo and Typee.”

When Tumblr Is Down Where Will We Find Book Deals?

UPDATE: Tumblr is working again. The popular microblogging site Tumblr was down for 20 hours with this message: “We’ll be back shortly. We’re working quickly to recover from an issue in one of our database clusters.  We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience.”

Already the company has fended off rumors that all the files were lost. Business Insider has more: “Earlier, we wondered if Tumblr‘s extremely long downtime meant it might have lost everything.’That’s ridiculous,’ is Tumblr’s official response from President John Maloney.”

The site has been a seemingly endless font of book material and book deals–are you concerned about the outage? For your late afternoon reading pleasure, here are  a number of Tumblr-to-book deals we covered on GalleyCat:

Tumblr Counts A Billion Posts, 7.2 Million Users & Tons of Book Deals

tumblrlogo.jpgToday TechCrunch reported that Tumblr has recorded more than one billion posts. Even more dramatically, the article counted 7.2 million users and 1.7 billion pageviews a month.

To celebrate, we’ve collected some of the book deals coming out of this creative blog network. In January 2010, the Stuff Hipsters Hate Tumblr blog sealed a deal. In that post, agent Jason Ashlock from Movable Type Literary Group explained the appeal of Tumblr book deals.

In April, the Hipster Puppies Tumblr blog inked a deal, we interviewed founder Christopher Weingarten about the “Natural Tumblr-to-Book Ecosystem.”

In May, What I Wore Tumblr blogger Jessica Schroeder scored a book deal.

In July, S*** My Kids Ruined Tumblr blog signed a book deal.

And don’t forget, GQ magazine called for an end to Tumblr book deals earlier this year.

Sh*t My Kids Ruined Lands Book Deal

The Tumblr to book deal trend continues apace as Julie Haas Brophy landed a book deal with Villard for her blog, Sh*t My Kids Ruined.

Just like the Tumblr blog, the book will include snappy commentary and plenty of photos of wrecked objects, rooms, and children–like this orange and blue paint mess that created a carpet-cleaning emergency. According to Publishers Weekly, the deal was negotiated by Inkwell Management’s Richard Pine and Villard’s Marnie Cochran acquired the title.

Here’s more about the book: “[It] will feature photos and stories of children destroying everything from windows to VCRs to their parents’ physique. The book, like the blog, will aim to offer a cathartic way for parents to laugh through, and off, the frustrations of child-rearing.”
