Tumblr Adds Official Analytics Tool

Tumblr, the blogging tool that has generated countless book deals, has introduced its first official analytics  tool through Union Metrics. Follow this link to get an invite to the service.

SocialTimes has more about the new tool: “Union Metrics will pull information from Tumblr through social data company Gnip. With 75 million blogs, 32 billion posts, and more than 70 million new posts on the blogging site per day, someone has to make sense of all that data … Union Metrics for Tumblr can help bloggers determine what kind of content resonates with their readers; marketers can use it to learn what people in their target demographic like to read.”

If you love the blogging site, check out our Tumblr Tips for Writers post and our Best Bookstores on Tumblr directory.

Best Bookstores on Tumblr

Is your favorite bookstore on Tumblr? We are building a directory of all the bookstores on the social network.

Tumblr Tips for Writers

The Tumblr social network has helped countless writers connect with readers over the last few years. We finally decided to open a GalleyCat Tumblr page, a warehouse for all the opinions, videos, photos and other items that didn’t quite fit on our publishing blog.

We caught up with Tumblr literary outreach Rachel Fershleiser for some advice about using the network. She shared five useful tips for writers who want to explore the social network. You can read her link-filled advice below…

If you have a Tumblr post you think we should see, just add the ‘galleycat’ tag to your Tumblr post. We will use the tag as a source for our own posts. The Millions created a handy Tumblr directory for readers and writers as well.

Police Sketches of Literary Characters

Writer and artist Brian Joseph Davis has launched The Composites, a Tumblr site with an ingenious premise: he posts computer-generated sketches of book characters.

Check it out: “Images created using law enforcement composite sketch software and descriptions of literary characters. All interesting suggestions considered.”

Writers and Kitties on Tumblr

Some GalleyCat posts just write themselves. For instance, you should check out the Writers and Kitties Tumblr blog.

The concept is pretty simple–the blog posts pictures of writers with kitties. Above, we’ve embedded a cute photo of Mark Twain and kitten from the site.

Here’s more from the site: “Where literature has whiskers and pointy ears.

Tumblr & Twitter Celebrity Kelly Oxford Lands Book Deal

Blogger Kelly Oxford has inked a book deal with two different HarperCollins imprints, It Books and HarperCollinsCanada. Oxford (pictured) writes a popular blog and has over 100,000 Twitter followers.

It Books editorial director Cal Morgan and HarperCollinsCanada nonfiction editor Kate Cassaday acquired the book for their respective imprints.  William Morris Endeavor agent Erin Malone negotiated the deal in a two auctions. Last month Oxford also sold a sitcom about her life to CBS Studios entitled The Mother of All Something. The book and television show will explore her life as a wife and mom.

Here’s more from the release: “Oxford is a wife and mother of three who lives in Calgary. A blogger since the 1990s, she has a wide and growing following on Twitter … In March 2010, she performed alongside Ben Stiller, Ashton Kutcher, Will Ferrell, and other celebrities in A Night of 140 Tweets, a fundraising event for Haitian earthquake relief in LA, which brought together the biggest names on Twitter. Her Tumblr has received more than 2 million hits in the last nine months alone.

Tumblr Site Dedicated To ‘Writers No One Reads’

Who is your favorite obscure author?

Submit your beloved but unknown author to Writers No One Reads, a Tumblr blog dedicated to lost writers. It’s the perfect site for uncovering weekend reading material.

Here’s one of our favorite entries: “No one reads Polish avant superman Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, a.k.a. Witkacy (1885 – 1939). Publisher description of his first play, Maciej Korbowa and Bellatrix (1918): “A psychotic guru known as the Master, Maciej Korbowa, aided by his gender-shifting alter-ego Bellatrix, presides over a secret club of disciples addicted to drugs, alcohol, and sado-masochistic orgies and leads this band of metaphysical desperados and decadent artists no longer able to create on a philosophical quest for absolute Nothingness — until he finally betrays them all to the revolutionary Sailors of Death.”

Lisa Simpson Gets Book Club on Tumblr

Ever wish you could read like a cartoon character? The Lisa Simpson Book Club Tumblr blog has been collecting the many book references made by Lisa on the long running cartoon, The Simpsons.

The inspiring (and funny) reading list collects references to everybody from Danielle Steele to Lillian Hellman to Joyce Carol Oates. Above, we’ve embedded a Scrabble scene from the early days of the cartoon show to illustrate Lisa’s well-read personality.

Here is a particularly funny quote from the show: “Well, I think we should invest in a set of The Great Books Of Western Civilization. Look at this ad from The New Republic For Kids: Each month, a new classic will be delivered to our door. Paradise Regained, Martin Cheselwitt or Herman Melville’s twin-classics Omoo and Typee.”

When Tumblr Is Down Where Will We Find Book Deals?

UPDATE: Tumblr is working again. The popular microblogging site Tumblr was down for 20 hours with this message: “We’ll be back shortly. We’re working quickly to recover from an issue in one of our database clusters.  We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience.”

Already the company has fended off rumors that all the files were lost. Business Insider has more: “Earlier, we wondered if Tumblr‘s extremely long downtime meant it might have lost everything.’That’s ridiculous,’ is Tumblr’s official response from President John Maloney.”

The site has been a seemingly endless font of book material and book deals–are you concerned about the outage? For your late afternoon reading pleasure, here are  a number of Tumblr-to-book deals we covered on GalleyCat:

Tumblr Counts A Billion Posts, 7.2 Million Users & Tons of Book Deals

tumblrlogo.jpgToday TechCrunch reported that Tumblr has recorded more than one billion posts. Even more dramatically, the article counted 7.2 million users and 1.7 billion pageviews a month.

To celebrate, we’ve collected some of the book deals coming out of this creative blog network. In January 2010, the Stuff Hipsters Hate Tumblr blog sealed a deal. In that post, agent Jason Ashlock from Movable Type Literary Group explained the appeal of Tumblr book deals.

In April, the Hipster Puppies Tumblr blog inked a deal, we interviewed founder Christopher Weingarten about the “Natural Tumblr-to-Book Ecosystem.”

In May, What I Wore Tumblr blogger Jessica Schroeder scored a book deal.

In July, S*** My Kids Ruined Tumblr blog signed a book deal.

And don’t forget, GQ magazine called for an end to Tumblr book deals earlier this year.
