Last night, the New York Public Library presented its annual Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism to Boston Globe correspondent Charlie Savage, the author of Takeover: The Return of the Imperial Presidency and the Subversion of American Democracy. The $15,000 prize is awarded annually to a journalist who “brings clarity and public attention to issues, events, or policies” through book-length reporting, and was established by Joseph and Helen Bernstein twenty years ago as part of a bequest to the library’s periodical collection.
