Chicago Public Library Offers Half-Month Fine Amnesty

The Chicago Public Library is offering patrons a fine amnesty that will last for half a month.

Check it out: “How often do we offer a fine amnesty? Once in a blue moon … and since there is a blue moon this month, you are in luck! Bring back any overdue items (no matter how overdue) between August 20 and September 7 and we will waive all overdue fines. If you’ve lost the item, all you will be responsible for is the replacement cost, no late fees! We want you back (and our stuff too)!”

The Facebook announcement has already earned nearly 8,500 likes as patrons enjoy the reprieve. According to an article in Bloomberg Businessweek, the library “is owed $1.4 million in outstanding fines on $2 million worth of materials”– so it is a major gesture to patrons.
