Classics Illustrated An Acquired Taste?

chesterbrown-chatterley.jpg

Remember last spring, when I was all gaga for the Penguin Classics comic book covers? Apparently not everybody is impressed as I am; blogger Alicatte Amp hates Chester Brown’s rendition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover (excerpted above). “The drawing-style is [Robert] Crumb meets Rex Morgan, M.D.,” Alicatte complains. “Can you imagine reading this edition on the subway or the bus? I would be wildly embarrassed.” I dunno, though: If there’s anything embarrassing about the cover to me, it’s D.H. Lawrence’s dialogue. That said, my dream cover for this series was and still remains Evan Dorkin’s take on Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men as performed by Fisher Price figures back in 1994:

PS: I think it’s kinda cute that Gawker finally discovered the Candide cover nearly a year after we first wrote about it.
