A Whole New World, That's Where We'll Be...DC Comics' latest reinvention makes the NYT arts section this morning, a prominent blast of mainstream recognition for developments that have been heating up comics news sites and fan blogs for some time. (Comic Book Bin has more details on how all the storylines, beginning with Identity Crisis, tie together--or don't--and on the longstanding DC/Marvel rivalry.) One of the main takeaways for the Times is the investiture of DC's superhero icons with new layers of moral ambiguity*, but they also comment upon the imprint's multi-writer approach to the overhaul, described as "more like the team model for writing a television series than the traditional solitary one for comics." The team's self-described "anchorman," Keith Giffen, describes the goings-on for Comic Book Resources. Another key member of the creative team, Geoff Johns, just signed a three-year exclusive contract with DC, renewing the three-year commitment he'd made back in 2003. Even before he was assigned script duties on Infinite Crisis, the limited series where many of the major changes will be introduced, Johns wrote some of DC's most popular heroes, including the Flash and the Justice Society of America. *Interestingly, though, Mark Waid told a fansite the Crisis would make things a little brighter: "We're sick to death of heroes who are not heroes, we're sick to death of darkness... After all this stuff, after everything shakes down, we're done with heroes being dicks. No more we screwed each other and now we must pay the consequences. No, we're super-heroes and that's what we do." Email This Post |
