Pet Parade Concludes with GalleyCats & Dogs

Welcome to the final installment of our annual pet parade, a holiday display of literary pets around the globe. GalleyCat readers have sent in pictures all week–the largest response we’ve ever received to the pet parade. Look for more pet pictures all week.

Hal Leonard Performing Arts publicity and marketing manager Diane Levinson sent that photo of Boomer the GalleyCat: “When Diane works at home (which she does a couple of days a week), Boomer loves to sit on the bench cushion right next to the computer where he can keep an eye on what she’s up to and occasionally ask for a belly rub. In this pic, taken a few weeks ago, he’s hanging out next to some current books Diane is working on—The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, December 8: 1980, and Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas–plus the all-important synonym finder.”

Follow this link to see more pet parade photos. More cute pictures follow below–click to enlarge the individual photos. If we neglected to post your photo, send us a reminder email and we’ll post it next week.

Lit Resolutions from Gretchen Rubin, Grace Lin, Michele Carlo & Bob Eckstein

Today is the last day we’ll be sharing the 2011 literary resolutions from writers. It’s still not too late for you to contribute to the Twitter hashtag. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see some of theirs and your goals come to fruition in the new year. Share your resolutions in the comments section or on Twitter. Happy Holidays!

Happiness Project author Gretchen Rubin: “My literary new year’s resolution is to write a young-adult novel in a month, using the writing structure suggested by Chris Baty’s No Plot? No Problem. I’ve done this before, to write a novel for adults, but this time I’d like to write a YA novel.”

Picture book author and illustrator Grace Lin: “My literary resolution is the same as it is every year–I haven’t been able to achieve it yet, but maybe 2011 will be the year! My literary resolution is to write something that I am so proud and confident of that the reviews or criticism of it wouldn’t matter. To make a book that is personally ‘review-proof’; to believe what I have done is good and not be affected by anyone’s opinions (good or bad). That and to stop eating while I write, especially high-sugar sweets. That’s a horrible habit I need to break.”

GalleyPup Types In Our Pet Parade

Welcome to GalleyCat’s annual pet parade, a holiday display of literary pets around the globe. GalleyCat readers have sent in pictures all week–the largest response we’ve ever received to the pet parade. Look for more pet pictures all week.

Editor Vicki Gundrum sent the excellent picture embedded above, here’s more: “Diva is my first reader on everything I write. She has an especially good ear for dialog but can get carried away and insert small rodent McGuffins as plot twists. These I dispatch. Here I’ve caught her messing with the original manuscript. She really needs to start writing her own books.”

Director Gary Ross said there are no lead contenders for the main role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movie.

Ross explained the process in an Entertainment Weekly interview: “I’ve talked to Suzanne extensively and I feel like I understand the character really, really well … I feel like I know who that girl needs to be.”

Producer Nina Jacobson confirmed the news in Digital Spy. However, she also revealed that auditions for acting jobs in the film will take place in early 2011.

How Many Kindle Books Can Be Shared?

How many books in your Kindle library can be shared with Amazon’s new lending program? So far, Macmillan and Scholastic seem to lead the field.

This GalleyCat editor did a quick search of his own Kindle library (pictured, click to enlarge), discovering that out of ten randomly chosen titles, only two books could be shared. Both sharable titles were published by Macmillan: Freedom by Jonathan Franzen and Travels in Siberia by Ian Frazier.

Titles published by Random House, Penguin, Hachette, Pantheon, and Bellevue Literary Press can’t be shared at this time. We also checked Just Kids by Patti Smith, a HarperCollins title that can’t be shared. The complete list follows below, listing title, author, and the publisher behind the title.

Charles Dickens vs. 30 Readers

Thirty writers and actors joined a marathon reading of the classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol at New York City’s Housing Works Bookstore Cafe before the holidays. In an article about the event, Bookish compared the reading to a similar reading staged by Charles Dickens in 1867. Editor’s note: We’ve added some commentary from Housing Works Books below.

A trailer for an animated adaptation is embedded above. Here’s more from Bookish: “Dickens was greeted with eager fans who waited for tickets overnight in the cold, wrapped in blankets and huddled around bonfires to keep warm. The cops were called in for crowd control. On the first night of his New York tour, a sold-out audience of more than 2,000 literary socialites and powerful businessmen gathered in the grand Steinway Hall by Central Park. They cried, laughed, and interrupted with applause during Dickens’ reading.”

According to the article, only about “a half-dozen” of the attendees stayed for the entire 3-hour reading. Literary enthusiasts aren’t what they used to be in the 19th century. Bah, humbug!

continued…

Denis Dutton Has Died

Denis Dutton, philosopher, author and founder of Arts and Letters Daily, passed away this week at 66-years-old.

The LA Times has a moving tribute to Dutton, a philosophy professor and author of The Art Instinct: Beauty, Pleasure, and Human Evolution.
