Barnes & Noble Stores Will Not Stock Books Published By Amazon

Barnes & Noble has decided not to stock books published by Amazon in their physical stores, keeping the new publisher out of the country’s largest network of brick and mortar bookstores.

Bloomberg Businessweek senior reporter Brad Stone called it “a declaration of war,” breaking the news with a statement from B&N’s chief merchandising officer, Jaime Carey. The bookseller will offer Amazon titles in their online store. Last week, Amazon revealed that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will distribute print books from Amazon Publishing.

Check it out: “Our decision is based on Amazon’s continued push for exclusivity with publishers, agents and the authors they represent. These exclusives have prohibited us from offering certain eBooks to our customers. Their actions have undermined the industry as a whole and have prevented millions of customers from having access to content. It’s clear to us that Amazon has proven they would not be a good publishing partner to Barnes & Noble as they continue to pull content off the market for their own self interest.” (Via Sarah Weinman)

Paulo Coelho: ‘Welcome to Download My Books for Free’

Signing a blog post as “Pirate Coelho,” bestselling author Paulo Coelho has joined a promotional program at the infamous file sharing site, The Pirate Bay.

Coelho praised the piracy site and urged his readers to download his work on peer-to-peer file sharing sites. The decision has already generated hundreds of comments–what do you think?

Check it out: “The Pirate Bay starts today a new and interesting system to promote arts. Do you have a band? Are you an aspiring movie producer? A comedian? A cartoon artist? They will replace the front page logo with a link to your work. As soon as I learned about it, I decided to participate. Several of my books are there, and as I said in a previous post, ‘My thoughts on SOPA,’ the physical sales of my books are growing since my readers post them in P2P sites. Welcome to download my books for free and, if you enjoy them, buy a hard copy – the way we have to tell to the industry that greed leads to nowhere.” (Image via)

(Debuted at #3 in Hardcover Nonfiction) Quiet by Susan Cain: “At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled ‘quiet,’ it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society–from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.” (January 2012)

(Debuted at #15 in Children’s Interest) Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai: “This is the moving story of one girl’s year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.” (February 2011)

In 2002, Gaiman filed his first suit claiming that he co-owned Medieval Spawn, among other characters that he had created. In 2010, Gaiman won a suit in which a judge determined that he should be paid royalties.

The Daily News has more about the settlement: “Jeffrey Simmons, one of Gaiman’s attorneys, said terms of the agreement were confidential … ‘This is intended to put an end to the whole thing. It’s fair to say both parties are pleased to have this resolved,’ Simmons said.”

Debbie Reynolds Lands Book Deal for Tell-All

Movie star Debbie Reynolds has inked a deal to publish a tell-all memoir with HarperCollins. Publication is set for 2013.

Unsinkable will be her second book with the publisher, following 1988′s Debbie: My Life. Trident Media Group CEO Dan Strone negotiated the deal with senior vice president Lynn Grady. Executive editor Jennifer Brehl will edit.

Here’s more from the release: “At the end of her 1988 autobiography, Debbie: My Life (Morrow), Debbie Reynolds talks about finally finding love with her third husband, calling him ‘brave, loyal and loving.’ Her marriage seemed like a great success until she discovered that her husband had his mistress stashed at the Stardust just down the street from Debbie’s own newly opened Las Vegas hotel. She then learned that he’d embezzled all the proceeds from her business, in addition to many other betrayals. When she confronted him, she barely escaped with her life. For the third time, Debbie would suffer a divorce that left her emotionally and financially bankrupt.” (image via)

Fake Cormac McCarthy Interviewed at The Atlantic Wire

The Atlantic Wire has posted an interview with Michael Crossan, the aspiring writer from Scotland who briefly fooled the Twittersphere by pretending to be novelist Cormac McCarthy.

As we reported last week, the fake account convinced hundreds of Twitter users, even managing to fool a Twitter executive before the account was suspended. In both those links, we archived the fake tweets for posterity.

Here’s more: “I did a search for Cormac McCarthy. I realized the chance of Cormac having a Twitter feed were remote. Cormac is religiously private. Of course there was no Cormac on Twitter. The idea flashed to create a parody Cormac feed. I created the account and did a search of the Twitter literati. I came across Margaret Atwood’s tweets. I had read and admired her novel The Handmaid’s Tale. As Cormac I tweeted her as I imagined he would do. I think Cormac is noble and sincere and blunt. I tweeted Margaret — ‘Please excuse my intrusion’ — and it escalated from there.” (Via HuffPost Books)

Occupy Wall Street Library Sending Books to Tucson

The Occupy Wall Street Library and Occupy Tuscon are raising funds to redistribute books that have been removed from Tucson Unified School District.

Last year, Arizona passed the controversial H.B. 2281, a bill banning school curriculum “designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group.” Along with the bill, a number of ethnic studies books have been removed from school district shelves (list follows below).

Check it out: “Acting in solidarity with OccupyTucson and the students, parents, and teachers of the Tucson Unified School District we are going send copies of the banned texts to Tucson for distribution. Lots of copies. As many copies as we can find and buy. We respect the rights of authors and publishers, so all copies will be completely legally purchased though an independent bookseller or directly from the publisher. Donations of the these texts are, of course, welcomed. We’ll be collecting funds via the WePay link on this page. Any amount will be gladly welcomed and all donations will go toward the purchase of books or shipping books.”

‘The Help’ Wins Three SAG Awards

The film adaptation of Katheryn Stockett‘s The Help took three awards at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards last night, including Best Ensemble Cast.

Follow this link for the full list of winners. Lead actress Viola Davis and supporting actress Octavia Spencer (both pictured, via) also won SAG Awards for their roles as Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson. Spencer recently received the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

Both Davis and Spencer have been nominated for Academy Awards. The Envelope had this quote from Spencer: “I love taking men home. I would be lying if I didn’t say to you I would love to win an Oscar. But we have a group of brilliantly talented actresses, and it’s not a foregone conclusion that because I’ve won these [awards] then I’ll win [the Oscar].” (Via The L.A.
How To Rescue Books on Goodreads

Starting today, Goodreads will stop using book identification information from Amazon. While this shift will not hurt any of the ratings, reviews or bookshelves you have created on the site, some books on your bookshelf may need help.

Follow this link see if any books on your Goodreads bookshelf need to be saved. Most of your books will not be affected, but it never hurts to check.

Here’s more from the social network: “Your ratings, reviews, and bookshelves are safe, but your data may be moved to a different edition of the book. If we can’t find a matching edition, then your review will be attached to a book with no title or author. Luckily, you can help us find alternate sources for book editions and rescue those editions. Rescuing a book is easy. Just click the ‘Rescue Me!’ button next to each book edition that needs help, and fill in the information on the following page. A few keystrokes can help preserve these book editions for millions of future readers.”

NYT Imagines a World Without Barnes & Noble

In a long article about the future of Barnes & Noble, New York Times reporter Julie Bosman wrote a gloomy passage imagining a world without the chain bookstore.

Here’s an excerpt: “Certainly, there would be fewer places to sell books. Independents account for less than 10 percent of business, and Target, Walmart and the like carry far smaller selections than traditional bookstores. Without Barnes & Noble, the publishers’ marketing proposition crumbles. The idea that publishers can spot, mold and publicize new talent, then get someone to buy books at prices that actually makes economic sense, suddenly seems a reach. Marketing books via Twitter, and relying on reviews, advertising and perhaps an appearance on the Today show doesn’t sound like a winning plan.”

What do you think–could the publishing industry survive without Barnes & Noble? The article included a staggering comparison between the stock prices of the leading booksellers: Barnes & Noble was valued at $719 million and Amazon was valued at $88 billion.

How Not To Read Poetry

Earlier this month, the Fishbowl Improv poetry group released the video embedded above: “How to Read Poetry.”

We are sharing the video to make you laugh and to remind you how not to conduct yourself at your next author reading.

If you want to avoid putting your audience to sleep, we recommend following the advice of Literary Brooklyn author Evan Hughes: “Keep it relatively brief and engaging. Keep in mind that reading aloud is a tough way to engage an audience. It can work, but I think it is best to be concise and have a range of people on stage for a few minutes each.”

Jonathan Franzen: ‘Maybe nobody will care about printed books 50 years from now, but I do’

Author Jonathan Franzen is not a fan of eBooks. While speaking at the Hay Festival in Cartagena, Colombia, last week, he said that print books are more permanent than eBooks.

The Telegraph UK recorded his comments: “Maybe nobody will care about printed books 50 years from now, but I do. When I read a book, I’m handling a specific object in a specific time and place. The fact that when I take the book off the shelf it still says the same thing – that’s reassuring. Someone worked really hard to make the language just right, just the way they wanted it. They were so sure of it that they printed it in ink, on paper.”

You can read more at eBookNewser: “Franzen defended the paperback technology saying that he could spill water on it and it would still work. He also defended the print format for its permanence.” You can also watch a video about more cutting-edge features of print books.
