Keeping Pets Safe After Hurricane Sandy

As GalleyCat readers cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, we wanted to post some extra information for all the galley pets in the audience. Pet owners should follow the #SandyPets hashtag on Twitter for more resources.

Alley Cat Allies posted this call for help rescuing cats in Atlantic City: “we will likely need volunteers to assist with assessment and recovery. If you live in or near Atlantic City and want to help, please let us know. We also want to hear from people in other areas of the country who were affected by the storm or who are offering assistance to those in need. Please contact us at info [at] alleycat [dot] org or 240-482-1980, ext. 330.”

The ASPCA Twitter page reminded readers: “Don’t let your pets drink from puddles, the flood waters may be toxic!” They also linked to a ASPCA page for helping pets after the hurricane. If you want to volunteer for animal rescue, you can email Gina [dot] Manke [at]aspca.org!

They have created Hurricane Sandy Lost & Found Pets page on Facebook to reunite lost pets with their owners. Below, we’ve included a Storify report from Antonia Laterza about pets during the storm.

$1,300 iPad Rocking Chair Lets You Charge While Reading

Reading in a rocking chair is cozy, but it’s a drag when you have to get up to charge your iPad. Now you don’t have to worry about that. For $1,300 you can cozy up with your iPad and a good eBook and charge your phone as you rock, thanks to a new rocking chair from Swiss company, iRock.

The iPad Rocking Chair does not come with an iPad. But it does have a dock, speakers and a generator built-in so that you can have old-fashioned comfort with high tech features.

Check it out: “The iRock is a product that explores how furniture can interact with technology and actually support the power for this technology. Movement is energy and to collect as much of this energy as possible is one of our future challenges. The laws of physics dictates how movement and friction constantly creates a vast amount of energy that in most cases are lost. iRock is a attempt to collect some of this energy and put it to real use.” An hour of rocking equals about a third of an iPad charge. (Via Time).

Bookstores Report Back After Superstorm Sandy

Shelf Awareness published a long list dispatches from East Coast bookstores today, recounting how many local bookstores survived Superstorm Sandy.

The list included dispatches from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and Delaware. Yesterday, we wrote about “major damage” at Powerhouse Arena, one of the Brooklyn bookstores in the storm’s path. Here’s an excerpt:

In Manhattan, McNally Jackson Booksellers offered reassuring words on Twitter: “We’re okay! No power, but also no water. We’ll be slinging books again in no time.” Housing Works Books was still assessing the situation, tweeting: “CLOSED today; our Internetz will be pretty quiet. No word yet on how the store fared–if you’re nearby, SAFELY take a peek & let me know?” A later update offered good news: “Just got word that the bookstore is power-less but no damage! We’ll be closed tomorrow, but that’s great news. Thanks everyone, stay safe.” The Strand Bookstore said that “as of right now, the store remains closed. Hopefully we’ll be back up and running (with power) soon!”

Political Cartoonist Launches Kickstarter Project

Political cartoonist and writer Matt Bors hopes to raise $20,000 on Kickstarter for his anthology, Life Begins at Incorporation: Cartoons and Essays by Matt Bors.

Bors, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, has created a 225 page-book with cartoons and human essays that profile all the crazy things about America from the year 2012. We’ve embedded a video about the project above–what do you think?

Here’s more about the project: “I’ve been drawing political cartoons every week since we stupidly invaded Iraq in 2003. Since then, my work has appeared in papers all across the country and been shared all over the web. I even picked up some prizes this year, like the Herblock. But I’ve never done a collection of my work … Editorial cartoonists are going through tough times with the collapse of old media and paying outlets – yet more people read them than ever before because of the web. I know people still value political satire and that’s what I want to prove with this book.”

Paul Cleave: ‘Read the best. And try other things.’

Have you ever written a scary story? In honor of the Halloween season, we are interviewing horror writers to learn about the craft of scaring readers. Recently, we spoke with author Paul Cleave.

Cleave (pictured) established his authorial career with six international bestselling thrillers. His latest book, The Cleaner, will be released in December 2012. Check out the highlights from our interview below…

Q: How did you land your first book deal?
A: It was actually pretty complicated. Back in 1999/2000 I was using a really well known manuscript assessor in NZ who would work on novels and then submit them on your behalf. I had no luck. Then a couple of years later I had a contract with a smaller publisher, which turned out to be a nightmare as they decided not to publish, and at the same time they decided they wouldn’t give the rights back. Then, in 2004, we all learned the manuscript assessor I had first used had, in fact, not been submitted these manuscripts at all, and for years had just be taking everybody’s money. It was pretty awful. Suddenly a bunch of us realized the bigger publishing houses had never seen our books – so I submitted it once again to Random House. In 2005 they signed it up, I got a lawyer to get my rights back from the previous publisher which was pretty simple in the end, and the rest is history.

Disney To Acquire Lucasfilm & Promises Star Wars Episode 7

Disney will acquire Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, promising to bring Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015 (“with more feature films expected”) as it takes control of the science fiction franchise.

Disney paid $4 billion for Marvel Comics in 2009. Lucasfilm co-chair Kathleen Kennedy will be the new president of Lucasfilm, working with Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn.

UPDATE: Lucas released a video interview revealing more about the future of the venture. The video has earned more than 489,000 page views since the announcement. While it has nearly 4,000 likes, it also has more than 1,200 dislikes on YouTube.

We’ve embedded the complete interview above, but here’s an excerpt: “I always said I was going to do anymore. That’s true. I’m not going to do anymore. But that doesn’t mean I’m unwilling to turn it over to Kathy to do more. I have story treatments of 7, 8 and 9 and a bunch of other movies. Obviously, we have hundreds of books and comics and everything you can imagine. I sort of moved that treasure trove of stories and various things to Kathy and I have complete confidence that she’s going to take them and make great movies.”

Goodreads Choice Awards Open For Voting

Goodreads has opened up voting for the 2012 Goodreads Choice Awards, a contest in which readers can decide on the best books of the year. Books up for nomination include titles from Junot Díaz, Barbara Kingsolver, Damien Echols, Cheryl Strayed, Baratunde Thurston and many more.

The site, which now counts 12 million members, has nominated 15 books in each category and users are invited to vote on their favorites. The nominees are based on the number of ratings and average ratings on the site. Here is more from the Goodreads blog: “We analyzed statistics from the 170 million books added, rated, and reviewed on the site in 2012 and nominated books based on the number of ratings and average rating. A nomination is truly an honor because it comes straight from the readers!”

This opening round of voting lasts through November 12th. Readers will have two more chances to vote after this round.

Hurricane Sandy pounded powerHouse Arena and the Brooklyn bookstore sustained “major damage” during the storm. Below, we’ve collected tweets and images from the store’s Twitter feed (including the photo of powerHouse Books CEO Daniel Power).

Located in the DUMBO neighborhood, the sprawling shop is a “gallery, boutique, book store, performance, and events space” that has hosted countless literary events. The bookstore published a series of tweets about the damage, showing how the water rose 28 inches inside the store during the storm.

Follow this link to visit the store online. The owners “hope to re-open soon.” In the meantime, here are some ways to help Hurricane Sandy victims on the East Coast.

How To Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

Hurricane Sandy smashed through the East Coast last night, leaving many in need. If you want to help victims of this terrible storm, you can donate money to Red Cross disaster relief right now.

You can also make an appointment to donate blood to the Red Cross. The organization explained in a report: “Nearly 100 Red Cross blood drives have already been cancelled due to the storm, and there could be more as the week goes on. This means a loss of as many as 3,200 blood and platelet products. If anyone is eligible, especially in places not affected by the storm, they are asked to please schedule a blood donation now.”

Over 3,200 people stayed in Red Cross shelters in nine states as Hurricane Sandy swept through the country. The group has sent 1,300 workers to the region along with 230,000 ready-to-eat meals.

As the East Coast emerged from Hurricane Sandy, a few bookstores opened their doors to the community. At the same time, literary blogger Edward Champion reported that Brooklyn’s Powerhouse Arena has been “devastated.”

We’ve collected a few Twitter dispatches from bookstores below, we will update as the day continues. Here is a growing list of ways you can help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

If you are looking for a place to relax or refresh during this tough time, your local bookstore could be a good place to visit. Community Bookstore summed it up: “You can’t beat a book when it comes to disaster comfort. Doesn’t need charging AND can be read by candlelight.”

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Playwright Inks Deal at Simon & Schuster

Berger’s book, Song of Spider-Man: The Inside Story of the Most Controversial Musical in Broadway History, has a tentative release date set for 2013. Publisher Jonathan Karp oversaw the acquisitions process for this project.

Here’s more from The New York Times: “[Berger] was brought onto the project by Tony winning director Julie Taymor, with whom he co-wrote the book, but he and Ms. Taymor had an ugly split when she was fired in 2011, and a new writer and director were brought in to make the musical more family- and tourist-friendly.”
