Life of Pi Book Cover Referenced in Film

In the recent adaptation of Yann Martel‘s Life of Pi, director Ang Lee included what appears to be a sly reference to the iconic cover art for the book.

Reddit user chrs1979 spotted the image in the film, comparing the images in the photo album embedded above–what do you think?

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has since published a movie tie-in version with a completely different cover.

What Is the Happiest Word?

What do you think is the happiest word?

A team of mathematicians from the University of Vermont published a paper examining 10,000 of the most frequently-used English words.

The group took this information and surveyed people; the collected data was used to rank the words according to happiness. The word “laughter” captured the number one spot and the word “terrorist” finished in last place.

Real Life Galley Cats in Our Pet Parade

Author Kristen Britain sent that photograph: “This is Watson, my 17 week old Siberian Cat kitten. Perhaps he’ll become a word cat through osmosis? His godmother is my Hugo-Award winning editor at DAW Books, Betsy Wollheim. (I am the author of the Green Rider series for DAW.) Watson has been a joy, and even Gryphon the Irish Terrier sorta likes him.”

The Joy of Books

Out of all the videos we posted on GalleyCat this year, “The Joy of Books” was the most popular–watch books frolick inside a closed bookshop.

If the video inspires you to support your local bookstore, here are some links: Best Indie Bookstores on Twitter and How to Buy eBooks from an Indie Bookstore.

Here’s more about the video: “After organizing our bookshelf almost a year ago, my wife and I decided to take it to the next level. We spent many sleepless nights moving, stacking, and animating books at Type bookstore in Toronto. Everything you see here can be purchased at Type Books. Grayson Matthews generously composed the beautiful, custom music. But none of it could have been done without all the volunteer hands who shelved and reshelved books all night, every night.” (Via Goodreads)

Top 10 Most Read Books in the World

Out of all the infographics we featured this year, one literary graphic was by far the most popular (and controversial) among our readers. Follow this link to see a larger image.

Designer Jared Fanning created a simple infographic comparing the Top 10 Most Read Books in the World, using a list compiled by freelance writer James Chapman–based on the number of copies each book sold over the last 50 years.

Check it out: “I have compiled this list of the 10 Most Read Books In The World after completing a long project of research to establish exactly which are the most read books in the world … You will find in this list a varied array of subject matter, covering a considerable number of years of some truly talented author’s work. Some of the authors are no longer with us, but the majority are still producing their masterpieces for our ongoing delight.” (Via Reddit)

Dennis Lehane Searches for Lost Dog Through Facebook

Crime novelist Dennis Lehane has reached out to his Facebook community to find his lost beagle, Tessa.

The writer promised to name a character in his next book after anyone who can help get the dog safely home. Tessa was lost in Brookline, Massachusetts. If you have spotted the lost dog, you can post to this Facebook link.

Here’s more from the novelist: “our recent and beloved rescue dog, Tessa, jumped the fence in Brookline and has been roaming through the wilds of Coolidge Corner for the last 24 hours. It’s possible she’s staying in some good Samaritan’s home right now or has tucked herself away on a porch. But if anyone sees her or knows of her whereabouts, please reach out to this page. Here’s a picture of her. She’s smart, fast, and immeasurably sweet. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She’s micro-chipped, but her tags were off when she was let out into the yard. Naming of character in the next book for anyone who gets her back to us! (No, really!) Again–Tessa, black-and-tan Beagle, 24 hours on the lam, sweet as all hell.”

Novelist P.I. Barrington sent a photograph of her literary dog, writing: “This is Gizeh, my Malamute/Timberwolf, acting as beta reader and editor for Isadora DayStar, my dark sci-fi adventure! She refused to take the specs off once I put them on her!”

More photos follow below–we will collect all the entries at this link.
