For Five Young Writers, a Library’s Lions Roar

The New York Public Library has announced the shortlist for this year’s Young Lions Fiction Award, awarded annually to a writer under the age of 35 (previous recipients have included Uzodinma Iweala, Monique Truong, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Colson Whitehead). The five nominees for this year’s $10,000 prize are:

  • Chris Adrian, The Children’s Hospital

  • Kevin Brockmeier, The Brief History of the Dead
  • Tony D’Souza, Whiteman
  • Olga Grushin, The Dream Life of Sukhanov
  • Karen Russell, St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised By Wolves

Brockmeier, Grushin, and Russell have already been tapped by Granta as three of their generation’s “Best Young American Novelists,” and will be taking part in various events during the magazine’s multi-author reading series, which kicks off next week at the New School‘s Tishman Auditorium. The Young Lion Award will be presented in a ceremony, almost certainly led by Ethan Hawke, at the New York Public Library on May 21.
