Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Agent Scores E-Book Deal

Carmen Balcells, the agent supporting Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Camilo Jose Cela, has bypassed publishers and struck a deal to publish both Nobel laureates directly through the Spanish digital book company, leer-e.

The books retail for 5 euros, but according to the Guardian, most Spanish paperbacks sell for 20 euros. Around twelve books are currently available, but the deal will soon include 120 books on Balcells list.

Here’s more from the Guardian: “As these [print publishers] do not hold the Spanish-language electronic rights to most of her authors’ books, Balcells is in effect publishing them directly through leer-e. ‘I cannot tell you exactly what rights the authors get, but I can say that it is much more than they get from their books printed on paper,’ said Ignacio Latasa, co-founder of leer-e.” (Link via)
