Holtzbrinck Rechristens Itself Macmillan
Just a few minutes ago, I received a tip in the form of what appears to be an internal email that claims that, sometime later today, Holtzbrinck will be changing its name to Macmillan, “one of the most venerable and respected names in publishing…[,] already used in over 70 countries for Holtzbrinck’s English language publishing operations.” (In the United States, those operations include Farrar Straus Giroux, St. Martin’s Press, Picador, Henry Holt, and Tor/Forge.)
“The name change from Holtzbrinck to Macmillan brings a unified worldwide presence to one of the largest publishing groups in the world,” the email continues. “Over the last 10 years as Holtzbrinck we have grown tremendously and worked diligently to maintain our publisher integrity while constantly improving our areas of consolidated operations. We feel we have accomplished both goals and more and our new name heralds that success and positions us for continued growth as a worldwide media company.”
And so it has come to pass, including a new “Mac Blog” where president Brian Napack says “we are shifting the way we think about how we do what we do” along with the name change, “Whether we are publishing a bestseller, a website, a podcast, a magazine, or a blog like this,” he explains, “we will be focusing on the ideas. And like ideas, we have the capability to change, move, and grow.”
