Learn your language on your cell phone

Berlitz tapes? That’s so 20th century. VOCEL, a “push technology” wireless company, and Random House’s Living Large Imprint have partnered together to bring to customers the Living Language mobile application, which delivers mobile phone lessons to consumers on their own time, anywhere they are with full audio pronunciation of hundreds of words. After introducing English as a second language and Spanish lessons last fall, the initiative has expanded to include French, German and Japanese.

“VOCEL’s partnership with Living Language to make mobile learning a reality for cell phone users has proved to be a great success,” said Carl Washburn, VOCEL’s CEO and founder, in a press release issued yesterday. “We are excited to be expanding the suite of languages offered as more and more people take advantage of the interactive, life-enhancement applications we are developing via our patent-pending technology.”

Living Language offers more than 600 words, phrases, grammar lessons and short readings that are sent to the user’s phone over the course of the subscription. And it sure beats rewinding those tapes to hear the same phrases uttered over and over…
