NEA Reports 6.6 Percent of Writers and Authors Are Unemployed

nea.jpegThe National Endowment for the Arts reported that 6.6 percent of all writers and authors in the United States are unemployed, releasing a new study that highlights some grim statistics for artists around the country.

Comparatively, performing artists had the worst unemployment rate out of all the artists included in the study–8.4 percent. The unemployment rate for all artists jumped 2.4 percentage points in the last year, a scary increase–the rate for the overall workforce climbed 1.9 points.

Here’s more from the study, Artists in a Year of Recession: “For artists, the economic downturn has meant correspondingly high unemployment rates and discouraging job prospects. This NEA Research
Note uses unpublished data from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics to analyze those employment conditions.”
