New Kenyan Library from Online Book Drive

A few months back, we told you how Masha Hamilton was pegging the publication of her new novel, The Camel Bookmobile, to a real-life book drive for a Kenyan library that uses camels to supply neighboring communities with reading material. Recently, Hamilton emailed to let us know that more than 200 authors, as well as several other individuals and organizations, had taken part in the effort—and the upshot is that the Garissa Provincial Library will be able to open a new “branch” 25 kilometers north of its original headquarters, in the village of Sakuri. In addition to an inventory of books, the new outpost will be supplied with three camels that can extend the library’s reach even further.

A short video from the book drive’s website shows how much of a difference that will make to the remote villages that can now receive visits from the Garissa librarians.
