NYT Drops Leroy from Freelance Rolodex

I’ve been out all day trying to see if my primary computer is salvageable (it isn’t, but thankfully there’s another laptop in the house), so it’s only at this very last minute that I’ve caught the Gawker item about how the Times travel magazine is killing a J. T. Leroy story since nobody knows who he really is anymore. It’s a shame; I for one would’ve been interested to see his thoughts on Deadwood. Editors did try to ask for his identity papers, but Leroy was having none of that. “I’ve always played with identity and gender. I understand what [the Times is] saying, but they entered into working with me knowing that,” he told a WWD reporter. And now it looks like they’re not even giving him a kill fee.
