In the press release, Winfrey explained that she chose this book because “these strong female characters represent the women that have shaped our history and, through Sue’s imaginative storytelling, give us a new perspective on slavery, injustice and the search for freedom.”

Winfrey will release a special Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 eBook edition of the book on January 7, 2014. She has interviewed Kidd for a forthcoming issue of O, The Oprah Magazine and plans to have a follow-up exclusive interview with the author on an episode of OWN’s Super Soul Sunday that will air sometime in 2014.
