Wednesday night, Ballantine Books threw a reception for four authors with self-improvement books coming out in early 2008: 1) Alan Corey, A Million Bucks By 30; 2) Bob Sullivan, Gotcha Capitalism (about battling credit card fees); 3) Ellen Whitehurst, Make Thhis Your Lucky Day; and 4) Alexandra Levit, How’d You Score That Gig?. Quote of the evening: “I originally didn’t want the words ‘feng shui’ attached to this book,” Whitehurst told me as reporters from several women’s magazines hovered around the authors’ corner, sizing up potential winter features(the subtitle is “Fun and Easy Feng Shui Secrets to Success, Romance, Health and Harmony”). “People think you’re talking about moving furniture, or you’re dabbling in the occult. It’s just about organizing your life around guiding principles.”
