After no Pulitzer Prize for fiction winner last year, the Pulitzer jury picked The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson for the fiction prize in 2013. See all the finalists at this link.

Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar won the drama prize. Embers of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America’s Vietnam by Fredrik Logevall won for history.

The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss won biography and Stag’s Leap by Sharon Olds won poetry. Finally, Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King won general nonfiction.

2013 Guggenheim Fellows Revealed

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has released its list of 2013 Fellows, and the list includes a number of literary winners.

Kiran Desai, Adam Johnson, Rachel Kushner, Ben Marcus, David Means, Terese Svoboda and Colson Whitehead were all named fiction fellows for 2013. The nonfiction fellows included: Joshua Foer, J. C. Hallman, Bill Hayes, Sylvia Nasar, Carlin Romano and David Rosenberg.

We’ve rounded up more literary winners below. Here’s more from the committee: “This year, after considering the recommendations of panels and juries consisting of hundreds of distinguished artists, scholars, and scientists, the Board of Trustees has granted Fellowships to 175 individuals.”

Adam Johnson Wins the Tournament of Books

Adam Johnson has won The Morning News’ annual Tournament of Books with The Orphan Master’s Son.

The contest pits novels in a competitive bracket like basketball teams during the NCAA tournament. The two finalists this year were The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and The Orphan Master’s Son. Johnson had this statement:

I’ll admit I’m a ToB addict, so it’s a special honor to be included in the bracket and to survive some fascinating matchups. And to get bumped, only to Zombie back? My highest achievement. Really, I read it all—the reviews, the color commentary, the reader comments, the NOOK ads—and it always got my day going by thinking about books: why we write them, how we read them, how we speak to them, what they mean to us. I will now demand that my publisher place silver Rooster stickers on all the paperbacks.

9th Annual Morning News Tournament of Books Announced

The ninth annual Morning News Tournament of Books (ToB) will commence in March 2013.

So far, 15 finalists have been revealed. Three titles from the “pre-tournament playoff round” are currently in the running for the sixteenth and final slot. We’ve included the two lists below.

Today we’re announcing the judges and final books for the 2013 competition as well as the long list of books from which the contenders were selected.”

Amazon Editors Pick the 20 Best Books of 2012 So Far

Today Amazon editors revealed their picks for the best books of the year so far. The top ten books on the list were all published by the Big Six publishers–no Amazon Publishing, indie presses or self-published titles.

The editors also picked their top ten books in all the popular categories: biographies & memoirs, business & investing, cookbooks, food & wine, crafts, hobbies & home, literature & fiction, mystery & thrillers, nonfiction, romance, science fiction & fantasy, comics & graphic novels, and teens, middle grade and picture books for kids.

Margaret Atwood Advises the 2009 Whiting Writers’ Award Recipients

“Congratulations to all ten of you. I’ll put you all in my blog.” author Margaret Atwood told the 2009 Whiting Writers’ Award recipients last night. She delivered some droll advice for the winners: “Write a cookbook or a book about vampires. Or troll through the classics, adding monsters…Or, better yet, write a vampire cookbook.”

Last night, ten authors received a $50,000 check from the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, part of the 25th annual Whiting Writers’ Awards. Since 1985, the philanthropic foundation has given emerging creative writers these grants. Previous winners have included: “Denis Johnson, Michael Cunningham, Alice McDermott, and Colson Whitehead. GalleyCat was there, shooting video interviews with the winners and finding out more about Atwood’s recent foray into the world of Twitter. “It’s been quite a lot of fun. I can send out desperate tweets and 15 people will answer my question,” she explained after the ceremony. Twitter hadn’t corrupted her writing style, she concluded: “It’s a descendant of the telegram. Telegrams required succinctness because they charged by the word. It’s a message.”
