Archipelago Books Appeals for Support

The Brooklyn-based nonprofit publisher Archipelago Books is asking for reader support during the publishing recession. Among many other titles, the press has published a translation of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar‘s novel, “A Mind at Peace” (which was presented to President Barack Obama) and a translation of Pierre Michon‘s novel “Small Lives” (which won the French-American Foundation translation prize).

According to Publishers Weekly, the press has been severely limited as its traditional sources of income have dried up during these tough economic times. The press has created a donations page and a subscription plan for readers looking to help them cope with the recession.

Here’s more from the article: “The spokesperson said that nonprofit presses typically piece together their budgets from ‘book sales, foundation support, government grants and from individual contributions. We don’t need to tell you that the recession has had severe effects on each of these sources of revenue.’” (Via J.A. Furtado)
