‘You Are Not Special’ Speechwriter Lands Book Deal

David McCullough Jr. has inked a book deal with HarperCollins’ Ecco imprint for a book based on his high school commencement speech, “You Are Not Special” (video embedded above).

McCullough Jr. is an English teacher and the son of historian David McCullough. His speech criticized our national focus on being special, explaining that  “life is a great adventure to swallow whole rather than a checklist to complete.” McCormick & Williams agent Amy Williams negotiated the deal with executive editor Hilary Redmon. Publication is tentatively set for fall 2013.

Here’s an excerpt from the speech that earned 1.6 million views on YouTube: “You’re not special. You’re not exceptional; contrary to what your U9 soccer trophy suggests, your glowing seventh grade report card; despite every assurance of a certain corpulent purple dinosaur, that nice Mister Rogers and your batty Aunt Sylvia. No matter how often your maternal caped crusader has swooped in to save you, you are nothing special. Yes, you’ve been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped.”

Owen King Sells His Debut Novel to Scribner

Owen King has landed a book deal with Scribner, publishing his debut novel with the same publisher as his father, Stephen King. Reenactment is an “epic, comic novel about a young auteur making his first film.”

Publication is set for spring 2013. McCormick & Williams agent Amy Williams negotiated the deal with senior editor Brant Rumble. Owen published his first collection of short stories, We’re All in This Together, with Bloomsbury in 2005.

Here’s more from the release: “Reenactment is the story of Sam Dolan, an aspiring filmmaker whose fledgling career takes an unexpected nosedive. Set mostly during Dolan’s post-college years, the novel centers on Dolan’s struggle to escape the trappings of professional disaster, difficult family, and questionable relationships.”

Elizabeth Kostova Jumps to Random House

Bestselling novelist Elizabeth Kostova (pictured, via) has inked a new publishing deal with Random House Publishing Group’s Ballantine Bantam Dell unit for her next novel. Publication is scheduled for 2013.

Little, Brown and Company had published Kostova’s previous two novels, The Historian and The Swan Thieves. Agent Amy Williams of McCormick & Williams negotiated the deal for North American hardcover, paperback, audio, and e-book publication rights.  Ballantine Bantam Dell editor-in-chief Jennifer Hershey will edit the novel.

Here’s more about the book: “The new novel will be set in the U.S. and Eastern Europe, and like The Historian will move between past and present, and combine elements of suspense, myth and folklore.”
