Special Olympics Athlete Responds to Ann Coulter Insult

Special Olympics athlete and John Franklin Stephens wrote an open letter to author Ann Coulter on The World of Special Olympics blog, criticizing her for using the word “retard” in a post about President Barack Obama.

During the final Presidential debate this week, Coulter tweeted: “I highly approve of Romney’s decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.” In his response, Stephens (pictured) called himself “friend you haven’t made yet” and asked Coulter ”why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?” You can read the full letter at this link, but here’s an excerpt:

After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV. I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash. Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor. No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much. Come join us someday at Special Olympics. See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.

Ann Coulter to Publish Mugged in October

Conservative author Ann Coulter has revealed the cover and subject of her next book, Mugged: Racial Demagoguery From the Seventies to Obama. TownHall had the exclusive details, explaining that the book “specifically blows President Obama’s racial posturing.”

William Morris Endeavor agent Mel Berger negotiated the deal with Sentinel publisher Adrian Zackheim. Coulter had previously published her work with Random House’s Crown Forum imprint. Here’s more about the book:

It took the O. J. Simpson verdict—the race-based acquittal of a spectacularly guilty black celebrity as blacks across America erupted in cheers—to shut down the white guilt bank. But now, fewer than two decades later, our “postracial” president has returned us to the pre-OJ era of nonstop racial posturing. A half-black, half-white Democrat, not descended from American slaves, has brought racial unrest back with a whoop. The Obama candidacy allowed liberals to engage in self-righteousness about race and get a hard-core Leftie in the White House at the same time. In 2008, we were told the only way for the nation to move past race was to elect him as president. And 53 percent of voters fell for it.

Adventures in Vanity Google Book-ing

Last week we encouraged our readers to perform a Vanity Google Book search–making some odd and useful discoveries.

It all started with an innocent Google Books search that revealed this GalleyCat editor was quoted in a book by Ann Coulter. Reader Allia Zobel was also surprised by her personal serach: “I found 438 results. What’s more fun, though, is the Google ads on the side that say, ‘Allia Zobel on sale,’ and ‘We found Allia Zobel.’ I didn’t know I was missing.”

In a noble twist, editor Allison Trzop changed Google Book-ing from a vain habit into a useful writing tool. It’s great advice for aspiring writers of all genres: “Handy free tool for writers via GalleyCat. Search name of editor/agent you’re pitching & see their past books.”

Vanity Google Book-ing

Working into the wee hours one night this week, this GalleyCat editor accidentally uncovered the next addictive online trend for the publishing set–Vanity Google Book-ing.

All literary folk should take a shot at Vanity Google Book-ing before the Google Books settlement is decided. It’s simple. Go to Google Books and enter your name into the “Search Books” field–the results may surprise you.

This GalleyCat editor discovered that he had been quoted–at length–in conservative pundit Ann Coulter‘s recent book: If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans–a surreal career milestone.

What did your Vanity Google Book-ing turn up? Share your adventures in the comments section.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal To Write Book

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced that he will write a book for Regnery Publishing, home to authors like House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Ann Coulter. It is scheduled for a 2010 release.

According to NOLA.com, the book will be co-written by Peter Schweizer, who helped former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger write a novel. Some see the book as a sign that Jindal may be pondering a Presidential bid.

Here’s more from the article: “‘One of the reasons I’m doing this with a co-author is to make sure there’s somebody else doing a lot of the heavy lifting,’ Jindal said, adding that he expects that most of his work on the book will be in the evenings and on weekends.” (Via Sarahw and JasonPinter)
