Les Miserables Teaser Trailer Released

The first trailer for an upcoming adaptation of the Les Miserables musical has been released, turning the hit musical version of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece into a film.

What do you think? The film will be out in December, competing with The Great Gatsby for literary movie-goers. Internet pranksters have already created a .GIF that captures a particularly emotive moment in Anne Hathaway‘s singing performance.

The Washington Post broke down some of the imagery: “We see images of Hugh Jackman’s Jean Valjean waist deep in water as prisoner 24601 and later comforting a fifthly young Cosette in a bleak forest. Then there’s Russell Crowe looking appropriately intense as Javert. Eddie Redmayne as Marius makes a stand for revolution on the barricades and eyes the lovely Cosette, played by Amanda Seyfried.”

New Trailer Released for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Legendary Pictures has released the third trailer for its upcoming Batman comic book adaptation, The Dark Knight Rises. We’ve embedded the trailer above–what do you think?

According to Comic Book Resources, Titan Books will publish the official movie tie-in novel by Greg Cox. Both the book and the movie will be released in July 2012.

Here’s more from E! Online: “[Anne] Hathaway gets lots of screen time in the new trailer as both [Selina] Kyle and her feline alter ego Catwoman. She appears to be taking Batman’s side and has no problem getting in on the action. There’s plenty of Jordon Gordon-Levitt‘s mysterious new cop John Blake looking all emotional. We also get to see franchise stalwarts like Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine) and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman).”

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer Released

Legendary Pictures has released a two-minute trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, the conclusion of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman film trilogy.

Follow this link to watch the trailer–what do you think? Nolan collaborated on the screenplay with his brother, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan. The movie will hit theaters in July 2012. The trailer highlights the infamous Batman villain Bane as he wrecks Gotham City.

Here’s more from Movies.com: “[The trailer revealed] some enticing dialogue from Anne Hathaway, playing Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman). Naturally her chat with Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), as they dance close together at a masquerade ball, falls somewhere between seductive and threatening, but that’s what we expect from her character. Will she be a villain? A romantic sidekick? Both? Other brief glimpses of Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Matthew Modine are exactly that — brief glimpses.”

Audible Hires Major Actors to Make Audiobooks

Audible.com has hired major actors to produce “tour de force performances” of new audiobooks. The stars helped choose the books, and the lineup includes Samuel L. Jackson reading A Rage in Harlem by Chester Himes and Kim Basinger reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin.

What celebrity would you choose to read your favorite book? The program will add more celebrities in the future. We’ve included the current list below…

Kate Winslet explained why she read Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola: “You use a different part of your brain and it keeps your creative juices flowing … It is challenging, and it’s a heck of a lot of fun as well. As a listener, being able to tune out and be taken into another world, an atmosphere, an environment that is being created entirely for you by somebody else’s voice is really a wonderful, magical thing.”

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Leaked on YouTube

A pirated version of the trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises materialized on different YouTube accounts this weekend–the video appears to have been videotaped from inside a movie theater. International Business Times described the short preview in this article.

According to reports, the trailer was shown before screenings of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part 2 . The trailer contained this message: “Every hero has a journey. Every journey has an end. From Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight Rises. The epic conclusion.”

For this Batman adventure, Gotham City’s caped crusader will battle Catwoman (played by Anne Hathaway) and Bane (played by Tom Hardy). In May, the movie’s Twitter account revealed a first glimpse at Hardy in costume.

The novel One Day just hit U.S. bookshelves today in a Vintage Books trade paperback, but Random House Films and Focus Features are already preparing to shoot the adaptation on July 12.

Austenmania Goes Stratospheric Starting Now

The Jane Austen biopic, BECOMING JANE, opens in limited release tomorrow and nationwide the week after. There are a slew of Austen-indebted novels just released on the market. What’s going on here, wonders USA TODAY? Of course they get plenty of answers as to why Jane Austen is hot, hot, hot almost 200 years after she died. “I think there’s an excellence to Jane Austen that people crave,” said Anne Hathaway, who plays young Austen in the movie. “Right now, I think it’s fair to say that mediocrity is being celebrated, and Austen will never stop being excellent. So it’s very reassuring.” There’s also the humor, the wit, and the proto-chick lit feel.

“People read Austen’s novels over and over again and just want to know what happens next,” said Deanna Parsi of Borders. New titles “ME AND MR. DARCY by Alexandra Potter and AUSTENLAND by Shannon Hale illustrate the timeless and universal appeal of Jane Austen. Her themes of society and love and relationships and family are still as relevant today as they were during her time.” Which makes BECOMING JANE look like a hit movie, though we’ll see when the box office returns come back….

The Teen-ification of Jane Austen

Though Jane Austen was all over the book, film and TV world? Then wait till 2007, when no fewer than six forthcoming films and television series, along with plans for new editions of her works, tailored to the teenage market, arrive on the scene. The Telegraph reports on the newest form of Austenmania that kicks off with the film BECOMING JANE, which examines the author (as played by Anne Hathaway, above) romance with Thomas Langlois Lefroy (James McAvoy), the Irish politician. Bookshops and libraries, anticipating a surge of interest in the author as a result of her exposure on both the big and small screens, are planning major displays of her works. A spokesman for Waterstone’s, Britain’s biggest bookseller, predicted it would sell more copies of Austen’s works than at any time since Colin Firth emerged from a lake during the BBC’s adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE in 1995, while Penguin said it planned new editions of the author’s six best-known works with covers designed to appeal to teenagers.

Andrew Davies, who has written adaptations of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY for the BBC, NORTHANGER ABBEY for ITV, and the screenplay for the 1995 production of P&P, predicted a new generation of teenagers would fall in love with Austen and her work. “The effect of all of these projects will make for a Jane Austen frenzy. The stories are absolutely contemporary. They are about sex and they are about money. One of the good things about Jane Austen is the men. They are real men – classy and rather scary. That makes them terrific for a female audience.”
