After dozens of challenges this year at libraries around the country, And Tango Makes Three by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson was the most challenged library book last year according to the American Library Association (ALA).

To support the books on the top ten most frequently challenged book list, we’ve linked to free samples of all the books on the list. Follow the links below to explore these controversial books yourself.

ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom director Barbara Jones had this comment: “While we firmly support the right of every reader to choose or reject a book for themselves or their families, those objecting to a particular book should not be given the power to restrict other readers’ right to access and read that book … As members of a pluralistic and complex society, we must have free access to a diverse range of viewpoints on the human condition in order to foster critical thinking and understanding. We must protect one of the most precious of our fundamental rights – the freedom to read.”

Glee Star Jane Lynch Lands Book Deal for Memoir

Glee star Jane Lynch has inked a deal to publish a “funny and inspirational memoir” with Hyperion’s Voice imprint. Mel Berger at William Morris Endeavor represented the book and editorial director Barbara Jones acquired the book in an auction. Jill Schwartzman will edit the memoir.

Happy Accidents will come out in September, following the arc of the actress’ career–from her time in The Second City comedy group to her work in Christopher Guest mocumentaries. It will also explore how “embracing her sexuality helped her find both personal and professional joy.”

In the release, Lynch (pictured, via) had this statement: “If I could go back in time and have a conversation with my 18-year-old self, the first thing I’d say is, ‘Lose the perm.’ Second, I would say, ‘Relax. Really—just relax. Don’t sweat it.’ For a long time, I was anxious and fearful that the parade would pass me by, and that someone or something outside myself had all the answers. Having finally reached a happy place—a happy accidents place—I want to share my story with others, to let them know things aren’t as bad as they fear.”

One Writer’s “Recession Diary” Lands Book Deal

An NPR freelance correspondent Caitlin Shetterly has landed a book deal writing about her family’s struggles during the recession, perhaps offering a bit of hope to other writers grappling with the tough economy.

Shetterly (pictured, via) reported on her family’s recession struggles in a blog and in a “Recession Diary” feature for NPR’s Weekend Edition. The show followed her freelance struggles, climaxing as she moved into her mother’s house along with her husband and newborn daughter. According to Publishers Marketplace, ICM agent Kate Lee sold Shetterly’s memoir to Barbara Jones at the Voice imprint–scheduled for publication in early 2011.

Shetterly spoke about landing her book deal at one of the lowest points in her life, on NPR: “Suddenly a light appeared in the darkness. The book proposal I’d written about our journey West and back home again started to get interest from publishers. My agent set up phone meetings and then, overnight, there were offers on the table. We sold the book. That day we had $16 in our bank account and an empty fridge. Like that, our lives changed. Great, well, I just signed away our lives.”
