Ben Fountain Wins National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction

The winners of the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Awards have been revealed. Ben Fountain won the fiction prize with Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Andrew Solomon took nonfiction with Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity.

Leanne Shapton won the autobiography award for Swimming Studies and Robert A. Caro took biography with The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson. D. A. Powell won the poetry award for Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys. Marina Warner took the criticism prize for Stranger Magic: Charmed States and the Arabian Nights.

The finalists for the 33rd annual Los Angeles Times Book Prize have been revealed, and we’ve collected free samples of all their books below–some of the best books released in 2012. Here’s more about the awards:

“The winners of the L.A. Times book prizes will be announced at an awards ceremony April 19, the evening before the L.A. Times Festival of Books, April 20-21. Held on USC’s campus in Bovard Auditorium, the awards are open to the public; tickets will be made available in late March.”

9th Annual Morning News Tournament of Books Announced

The ninth annual Morning News Tournament of Books (ToB) will commence in March 2013.

So far, 15 finalists have been revealed. Three titles from the “pre-tournament playoff round” are currently in the running for the sixteenth and final slot. We’ve included the two lists below.

Here’s more from the announcement: “The ToB is an annual springtime event here at the Morning News, where 16 of the year’s best works of fiction enter a March Madness-style battle royale. Today we’re announcing the judges and final books for the 2013 competition as well as the long list of books from which the contenders were selected.”

Ben Fountain Wins the Center for Fiction’s 2012 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize

The Center for Fiction has named Ben Fountain as the winner of the 2012 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. He won the $10,000 prize for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

The judging panel included American writers Francisco Goldman, Lev Grossman, Heidi Julavits, Paul La Farge and Bonnie Nadzam. Prior to establishing his career as a writer, Fountain worked as an attorney.

Here’s more from the release: “Fountain has received the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Barnes & Noble Discover Award for Fiction, a Whiting Writers Award, an O.Henry Prize, and two Pushcart Prizes, among other honors and awards. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was shortlisted for the National Book Award this year”
