<title>Ben Fountain Wins National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-66232" title="nbcc_logo_sq" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/files/2013/03/nbcc_logo_sq.jpeg" alt="" width="132" height="132" />The winners of the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Awards have been revealed. <strong>Ben Fountain</strong> won the fiction prize with <em>Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk</em> and <strong>Andrew Solomon</strong> took nonfiction with <em>Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity</em>.</p>
<p><strong>Leanne Shapton</strong> won the autobiography award for <em>Swimming Studies</em> and <strong>Robert A. Caro</strong> took biography with <em>The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson</em>.  <strong>D. A. Powell</strong> won the poetry award for <em>Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys</em>. <strong>Marina Warner</strong> took the criticism prize for <em>Stranger Magic: Charmed States and the Arabian Nights</em>.</p>

<title>9th Annual Morning News Tournament of Books Announced</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft  wp-image-62927" title="ToB-2013" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/files/2012/12/ToB-2013.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="175" />The ninth annual <em>Morning News</em> <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/2011-tournament-of-books-roster-revealed_b21540" target="_blank">Tournament of Books (ToB)</a> will commence in March 2013.</p>
<p>So far, 15 finalists have been revealed. Three titles from the &#8220;pre-tournament playoff round&#8221; are currently in the running for the sixteenth and final slot. We&#8217;ve included the two lists below.</p>

<title>Ben Fountain Wins the Center for Fiction&#8217;s 2012 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><img class="wp-image-62480 alignright" title="9780060885595" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/files/2012/12/9780060885595-198x300.jpg" alt="" width="119" height="180" />The Center for Fiction has named <strong>Ben Fountain</strong> as the winner of the 2012 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. He won the $10,000 prize for <em>Billy Lynn&#8217;s Long Halftime Walk</em>.</p>
<p>The judging panel included American writers <strong>Francisco Goldman</strong>, <strong>Lev Grossman</strong>, <strong>Heidi Julavits</strong>, <strong>Paul La Farge </strong>and <strong>Bonnie Nadzam</strong>. Prior to establishing his career as a writer, Fountain worked as an attorney.</p>
