In honor of National Poetry Month, we’ve dug up a video of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reciting Howard Nemerov‘s poem, “The Makers.”

Clinton, who at the time was serving as First Lady, recorded this video for “The Favorite Poem Project” in 1999. Her husband, President Bill Clinton, also participated in this project. This project was founded by the 39th poet laureate of the United States, Robert Pinsky.

In the past, Clinton wrote and published several books including the 1996 nonfiction title It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us and the 2003 memoir Living History. At the moment, speculations and rumors are circulating about the new book Clinton plans to pen. What do you think?

The Poetry Foundation has published “Poetic Presidents,” a study of 12 Presidents and “the poets that inspired them.”

Just in time for the election, the match-ups include George Washington and Phyllis Wheatley (the first African-American female to publish a book of poetry), John F. Kennedy and Robert Frost (the first poet to perform a reading at a presidential swearing in event) and Barack Obama and Elizabeth Alexander.

Bill Clinton

In the book, the former president suggests his ideas for how to deal with the current economic crisis including increasing bank lending and corporate investment.

Clinton writes about his motivation for the idea in the book: “I wrote this book because I love my country and I’m concerned about our future. As I often said when I first ran for President in 1992, America at its core is an idea — the idea that no matter who you are or where you’re from, if you work hard and play by the rules, you’ll have the freedom and opportunity to pursue your own dreams and leave your kids a country where they can chase theirs.”

According to the Associated Press, Clinton had this book review: “Decision Points is well-written, and interesting from start to finish. I think people of all political stripes should read it. George W. Bush also gives readers a good sense of what it’s like to be president, to take the responsibilities of the office seriously, do what you think is right, and let history be the judge.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Bush’s memoir generated the largest first-day sales for a nonfiction book Random House had seen in 6 years. On opening day, Bush sold an estimated 220,000 copies (counting hardcover and eBook sales). Random House published Clinton’s memoir in 2004, counting 400,000 copies sold on the first day.

Renowned poet Maya Angelou has donated 300 boxes filled with her personal papers to the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Angelou had this quote in the press release: “The Schomburg is a repository of the victories and the losses of the African American experience … I am grateful that it exists so that all the children, Black and White, Asian, Spanish-Speaking, Native American, and Aleutian can know there is a place where they can go and find the truth of the peoples’ history.”

The donation contains the notes for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and some of her most famous poems. One notable inclusion are the notes for the poem written at the request of former President Bill Clinton, On the Pulse of Morning. The video embedded above shows her reading it at Clinton’s 1993 inauguration. Several unpublished manuscripts and poems have also been included in the lot.

According to Deadline New York, the deal was negotiated by Tony Burton from Don Buchwald & Associates’ and Richard Abate from 3 Arts. The report also states that the Random House imprint Spiegel & Grau will publish the book. Dell’Abate (pictured with former President Bill Clinton) has served as a producer on Stern’s show since 1984 and maintains his own site.

Here’s more from Deadline: “I understand that Howard mentioned something about this on his Sirius show this morning — and the book has already jumped to No. 1 on Amazon’s ‘Movers And Shakers’ based on book pre-orders. So let’s see: Howard himself had 3 bestsellers, Robin Quivers had 1, Artie Lange had the most recent and now it’s obvious that Baba Booey will have one as well.”

Random House has made a sizable donation to relief efforts, joining a 100,000 euros by their corporate parent, Bertelsmann AG. Here’s more: “Random House, Inc. is making a $100,000 corporate contribution to be shared by the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund and Partners in Health. The latter is a long-established Haitian health-care provider, miraculously left standing post-earthquake, led by Paul Farmer. Finally, TIME /Time Inc. Home Entertainment will release a short book entitled “Haiti,” complete with earthquake coverage by Time luminaries and an afterward by President Bill Clinton. Here’s more: “The book will include exclusive photos from TIME photographers and analysis from top experts on the country. TIME will donate at least $75,000 of proceeds to benefit Haitian relief efforts.”

As already speculated, Blair’s approach direct to the US is seen as an attempt to bag the biggest deal possible by capitalizing on his popularity there, Rushton explains. Securing Barnett, who won big money for Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan advance-wise (and also represents James Patterson now) is also likely to inflate Blair’s advance. He’ll get a good whack out of a US publisher.” And the direct approach to the US is seen to thwart UK agents who were vying for a slice of the action. “It will be a shoot out between HarperCollins and Random House, but I think HarperCollins will prevail despite the much trumped link with Gail Rebuck‘s husband.
