Hillary Clinton Reads ‘The Makers’ by Howard Nemerov

In honor of National Poetry Month, we’ve dug up a video of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reciting Howard Nemerov‘s poem, “The Makers.”

Clinton, who at the time was serving as First Lady, recorded this video for “The Favorite Poem Project” in 1999. Her husband, President Bill Clinton, also participated in this project. This project was founded by the 39th poet laureate of the United States, Robert Pinsky.

In the past, Clinton wrote and published several books including the 1996 nonfiction title It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us and the 2003 memoir Living History. At the moment, speculations and rumors are circulating about the new book Clinton plans to pen. What do you think?

Poets Who Inspired Presidents

The Poetry Foundation has published “Poetic Presidents,” a study of 12 Presidents and “the poets that inspired them.”

Just in time for the election, the match-ups include George Washington and Phyllis Wheatley (the first African-American female to publish a book of poetry), John F. Kennedy and Robert Frost (the first poet to perform a reading at a presidential swearing in event) and Barack Obama and Elizabeth Alexander.

Here’s more from the article: “Politicians campaign in poetry and govern in prose, former New York governor Mario Cuomo once said. While it’s debatable whether this epically long and tumultuous election cycle has inspired much verse, we at the Poetry Foundation would like to think that poetry has its place at the White House regardless of who emerges as the victor on November 6.”

Bill Clinton Addresses Economic Crisis In New Book

Bill Clinton has a new book coming out that addresses the challenges facing the United States with his ideas on how to get the economy going again. Alfred A. Knopf is publishing the work, which is called Back to Work. It comes out in November.

In the book, the former president suggests his ideas for how to deal with the current economic crisis including increasing bank lending and corporate investment.

Clinton writes about his motivation for the idea in the book: “I wrote this book because I love my country and I’m concerned about our future. As I often said when I first ran for President in 1992, America at its core is an idea — the idea that no matter who you are or where you’re from, if you work hard and play by the rules, you’ll have the freedom and opportunity to pursue your own dreams and leave your kids a country where they can chase theirs.”

President Barack Obama‘s picture book, Of Thee I Sing, arrived in bookstores and eBook format today.
President Obama’s attorney, Robert B.
Bill Clinton Praises George W. Bush’s Memoir

George W. Bush‘s Decision Points has received a positive endorsement by former president Bill Clinton.

According to the Associated Press, Clinton had this book review: “Decision Points is well-written, and interesting from start to finish. I think people of all political stripes should read it. George W. Bush also gives readers a good sense of what it’s like to be president, to take the responsibilities of the office seriously, do what you think is right, and let history be the judge.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Bush’s memoir generated the largest first-day sales for a nonfiction book Random House had seen in 6 years. On opening day, Bush sold an estimated 220,000 copies (counting hardcover and eBook sales). Random House published Clinton’s memoir in 2004, counting 400,000 copies sold on the first day.

Maya Angelou Donates Personal Papers to the New York Public Library

Renowned poet Maya Angelou has donated 300 boxes filled with her personal papers to the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Angelou had this quote in the press release: “The Schomburg is a repository of the victories and the losses of the African American experience … I am grateful that it exists so that all the children, Black and White, Asian, Spanish-Speaking, Native American, and Aleutian can know there is a place where they can go and find the truth of the peoples’ history.”

The donation contains the notes for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and some of her most famous poems. One notable inclusion are the notes for the poem written at the request of former President Bill Clinton, On the Pulse of Morning. The video embedded above shows her reading it at Clinton’s 1993 inauguration. Several unpublished manuscripts and poems have also been included in the lot.

Howard Stern Show Producer Gary Dell’Abate Scores Book Deal

Howard Stern Show producer Gary Dell’Abate landed “a mid-6 figure book deal” for his new book, They Call Me Baba Booey. He will co-write the autobiographical book with author Chad Millman, and it is listed in Amazon with a November 2010 release.

According to Deadline New York, the deal was negotiated by Tony Burton from Don Buchwald & Associates’ and Richard Abate from 3 Arts. The report also states that the Random House imprint Spiegel & Grau will publish the book. Dell’Abate (pictured with former President Bill Clinton) has served as a producer on Stern’s show since 1984 and maintains his own site.

Here’s more from Deadline: “I understand that Howard mentioned something about this on his Sirius show this morning — and the book has already jumped to No. 1 on Amazon’s ‘Movers And Shakers’ based on book pre-orders. So let’s see: Howard himself had 3 bestsellers, Robin Quivers had 1, Artie Lange had the most recent and now it’s obvious that Baba Booey will have one as well.”

President Bill Clinton Reads a Book Blog

Los Angeles Times book blogger Carolyn Kellogg received a personalized note from former President Bill Clinton responding to a story she wrote about his reading habits–a two-page missive that included Clinton’s current reading list.

Clinton has led a literary life, speaking to publishers and writing his bestselling memoir. His current reading list contains seven books, an eclectic mix of fiction and nonfiction.

Here’s part of Clinton’s reading list, but be sure to read the rest: “Here’s a list of books Bill Clinton has been reading lately, from his own pen: “1. Steven Johnson‘s “The Invention of Air” and “The Ghost Map,” esp. #1 2. Tom Zoellner‘s “Uranium” 3. Malcolm Gladwell‘s “Outliers,” his best book.”

Tony Blair to Meet Publishers This Fall

Even though it’s highly likely that a memoir from former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is years in the offing, that doesn’t mean there can’t be stories about every permutation and combination relating to such a possible step. To wit, the Bookseller’s Katherine Rushton reports that Blair will meet publishers in London at the start of October, together with Robert Barnett, the Washington lawyer he has instructed to sell his memoirs. Random House and HarperCollins are expected to make bids for the book, and Bloomsbury (in a partnership with Miramax) and Simon & Schuster have confirmed they are also entering the fray. Hachette is understood to have ruled itself out of the competition, although CEO Tim Hely Hutchinson declined to comment to the Bookseller.

As already speculated, Blair’s approach direct to the US is seen as an attempt to bag the biggest deal possible by capitalizing on his popularity there, Rushton explains. Securing Barnett, who won big money for Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan advance-wise (and also represents James Patterson now) is also likely to inflate Blair’s advance. Rushton also has more in the Telegraph today about the pre-Frankfurt plan for Blair.

Blair Picks Barnett to Broker Book Deal

Yesterday afternoon the Bookseller broke the story that literary lawyer to the stars Bob Barnett would be representing Tony Blair – and shopping around the former UK prime minister’s interests to America first. So of course, people are wondering a) who will get the book and b) how much they will have to pay for it. Bill Clinton money? Alan Greenspan money? Something even greater?

The advance will be inflated by Blair’s perceived value in the US, said one leading publisher of political books. “The Americans love him. They see him as an articulate George W. Bush. He’ll get a good whack out of a US publisher.” And the direct approach to the US is seen to thwart UK agents who were vying for a slice of the action. “It will be a shoot out between HarperCollins and Random House, but I think HarperCollins will prevail despite the much trumped link with Gail Rebuck‘s husband. [Rupert] Murdoch‘s keen and he’s got deep pockets,” said a major non-fiction publisher. “They’ve been political bedfellows for a very long time, and [News Corp] is a multimedia company,” a leading UK literary agent added. Shootout royale? Major league auction? Stay tuned, as the drill goes..
