Brandon Sanderson & Patrick Rothfuss Write Dueling Inscriptions

Fantasy novelist Patrick Rothfuss posted photographs of dueling author inscriptions on his Facebook today, sparring playfully with Wheel of Time series co-author Brandon Sanderson.

In one reader’s copy of The Wise Man’s Fear, Rothfuss took a crack at a book written by Sanderson: ” more majestic than Way of Kings.” Sanderson wrote a funny comeback in a copy of The Way of Kings: “1000% less sex with random goddesses than Wise Man’s Fear.”

Rothfuss surrendered after this inscription, writing “Well played, Sanderson…. Well played….” on Facebook this morning.
Brandon Sanderson Records His Writing Process

After wrapping his work on the final book of Robert Jordan‘s Wheel of Time series, fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson will let his fans watch him write a chapter of his new book online.

Using the Camtasia screen recording software, the novelist has begun to videotape his entire writing process for a chapter, starting with his initial notes (video embedded above). Would you do this for your readers?

Here is more about the process: “New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson writes a chapter from the sequel to The Way of Kings, to be published in late 2013 (hopefully) or early 2014. This is the real-time version. After all of the videos have been uploaded we’ll make a high-speed version of the chapter.” (Link via)

A Memory of Light Debuts at No. 1 on NYT Best Sellers List Despite Negative Campaign

A Memory of Light debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times Best Sellers List this week, despite an online campaign to give one-star ratings to the conclusion of the epic fantasy Wheel of Time series created by the late Robert Jordan.

The digital book will not be released until April 9th. This decision generated a slew of angry one-star reviews on Amazon–most by people who had not read the book.

As of this writing, the book had 270 one-star reviews on Amazon, most of them from readers upset about the lack of a digital book. Do you think this negative campaign will influence any book buyers?

Brandon Sanderson: ‘My Involvement as a Writer in the Wheel of Time Has Come to an End’

In a long Google+ post, novelist Brandon Sanderson revealed that he has finished his last set of edits on A Memory of Light, the final book in The Wheel of Time series (an epic fantasy created by the late Robert Jordan).

Tor Books has set a January 2013 release for the book. Jordan died in 2007, and Sanderson used his notes to finish the series over the last five years, publishing The Gathering Storm in 2009 and Towers of Midnight in 2010.

Sanderson revealed that he will not return to The Wheel of Time universe: “I step away from being pilot of this series, and toward once again being just a fan. I will never cross back over that line—whatever else happens, I will have written three books in this series.”

Wheel of Time Series to Conclude in January

Tor Books has set a January 8, 2013 release date for A Memory of Light, the final book in The Wheel of Time series–concluding the epic fantasy created by the late Robert Jordan.

After Jordan died in 2007, novelist Brandon Sanderson (pictured) used his notes to write the conclusion to the series, publishing The Gathering Storm in 2009 and Towers of Midnight in 2010. When the news hit the Internet this afternoon, Tor.com and Sanderson’s site both struggled to handle the rush of traffic.

Sanderson posted a frank essay about the writing process on his Facebook page: “I turned in a 360,000-word book. That’s 20% longer than what they wanted, and that means each step of editing and production will require 20% more time than they had set aside. In addition, while I’ve set my own deadlines, I’ve come right up against them and (in a few cases) tiptoed across. For example, instead of sending a revised book at the end of December, I only had a first draft. That’s the length pushing me back and making me revise expectations.”

Brandon Sanderson Sells Two Novels to Tor Books

Tor Books has acquired two new novels by fantasy writer, Brandon Sanderson (pictured).

The first novel, Mistborn: The Alloy of Law, takes place in “a frontier era where ‘allomancy’ meets gunplay.” The standalone novel will focus on the world of Sanderson’s Mistborn trilogy, and publication is set for late 2011.

Here’s more about the second book, to be published in 2012: “Set in an alternate-history America where magic users (called ‘Rithmatists’) battle wild chalk creatures, The Rithmatist introduces Joel, a student at the Rithmatist academy with great interest in but no ability to use the magic. But when students start vanishing, it’s up to him to expose the sinister figure behind the disappearances.”

Instead of using a neutral production company, Tor Books enlisted the help of Dragonmount.com founder and Wheel of Time fan Jason Denzel to make the book trailer for Towers of Midnight. The trailer is embedded above.

The book is the penultimate (and thirteenth!) novel in The Wheel of Time series, written by the late Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Here’s more about the video, from the site: “Produced by the creative forces of Dragonmount.com and Mythmakers Entertainment, this video is the first-ever official video representation of Robert Jordan’s masterpiece series. The majority of the crew for this project were fans themselves … Go behind the scenes and watch the making of the trailer at Outta This World.”
