Markus Zusak: ‘I want to write so much like me that no one else could have told that story’

Yesterday, author Markus Zusak and filmmaker Brian Percival (pictured, via) appeared in New York City to promote The Book Thief movie adaptation. During the event, they answered questions, showed the trailer, and shared film clips.

For Zusak, his main mission as a writer is to “write so much like me that no one else could have told that story. For better or worse.” While working as a teacher, Zusak encouraged his students to adopt this philosophy. What do you think?

Zusak feels that The Book Thief focuses on the idea that “we’re made of many things, but one of the most important things we’re made of are stories.” He also revealed that he has been working on a manuscript for the past six years, but needs to “stop mucking around” and finish it.

Fox 2000 Releases ‘The Book Thief’ Trailer

Fox 2000 has released an official trailer for The Book Thief movie.

We’ve embedded the video above–what do you think? The story of this film adaptation, helmed by filmmaker Brian Percival, originates from Markus Zusak’s popular young adult novel.

The trailer offers viewers a first glimpse at Sophie Nelisse playing the title character, Liesel Meminger. Deadline reports that this movie will hit theaters on November 15, 2013.

Fox 2000 has acquired the film rights to The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Rumors have swirled that Downtown Abbey director Brian Percival would helm this movie project, but it has not been confirmed.

The movie studio has recruited Sophie Nelisse to play the title character of Liesel Meminger. Oscar-nominated actor Geoffrey Rush and War Horse actress Emily Watson will portray Liesel’s foster parents.

Downton Abbey Director May Adapt Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief

Brian Percival may direct a film adaptation of Markus Zusak‘s The Book Thief for Fox 2000.

According to Deadline, The Twilight Saga film series producer Karen Rosenfelt is already on board. Michael Petroni, the screenwriter behind The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, has written the script. Production could start as early as summer 2012.

Throughout his directorial career, Percival has largely focused on television projects. In 2010, he won the Emmy for “Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special” for his work on the drama Downton Abbey.
