Matilda the Musical Heads to Broadway

Next year, Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company will bring Matilda the Musical to Broadway in New York City. According to United Press International, the UK production of the musical “continues to play to sold-out houses.”

Here’s more from UK production’s official site: “Roald Dahl’s much-loved story bursts into life on stage in this brand new musical version by Dennis Kelly and award-winning musician and comedian Tim Minchin. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.”

We’ve embedded the show’s trailer above. Dahl published Matilda in 1988 and Quentin Blake illustrated the novel. Since its release, Matilda has spawned a 1996 movie adaptation and a two-part BBC Radio special. Which actress would you cast as the telekinetic genius heroine?

The Book of Mormon: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical Out Today

Newmarket Press has released The Book of Mormon: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical today.

This book will be the only official companion book of the theatrical production. It features 128 pages and 28 color photos. To date, The Book of Mormon has received 14 Tony Award nominations.

Here’s more from the press release: “The Book of Mormon: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical includes: a foreword by journalist Mark Harris (author of Pictures at a Revolution); an original introduction by the authors [Trey ParkerRobert Lopez, and Matt Stone] on the genesis of the show; a production history; and the complete book and lyrics, with four-color spot illustrations throughout.”

Carrie the Musical to Return to Broadway

Carrie: The Musical will return to Broadway. Above, we’ve embedded a collection of local news reviewers panning the infamous musical in the late 1980s.

Here’s more from The Washington Post: “MCC Theater said Tuesday that it will remount the musical based on the 1974 Stephen King novel in January. It will be the first time the show has been professionally produced since its 1988 Broadway flop.”

According to the article, the show’s original authors, composer Michael Gore, lyricist Dean Pitchford, and writer Lawrence D. Cohen, have signed on to revitalize the show. Molly Ranson will star in the title role and Marin Mazzie will play her religious mother Margaret White.

Paris Review Hosts Couplet Contest

The Paris Review will be giving away two tickets to Tom Stoppard‘s Broadway play “Arcadia.” To win, write a poetic couplet in response to the question, “Does Carnal Embrace Addle the Brain?”

Here are more details about the contest: “Keep your lines to a couplet, but in true Stoppardian fashion, let your imagination run wild: anything from the impending Kardashian nuptials to Kate Wood’s philosophy to the (alleged) crimes of DSK is fair game. Share yours in comments below.”
