National Book Awards Tonight

GalleyCat contributor and eBookNewser editor Dianna Dilworth will be covering the National Book Awards tonight at Cipriani Wall Street. Follow her coverage live on our GalleyCat Twitter feed and on this blog. Below, we’ve linked to free samples of all the National Book Awards finalists.

At the ceremony three years ago, this GalleyCat editor interviewed Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell, NBA finalist Salvatore Scibona, NBA executive director Harold Augenbraum and literary blogger Edward Champion about the Great Recession (video embedded above). The stock market had just plunged 400 points and writers gathered for the awards a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange.

This year, the city is still divided over Occupy Wall Street eviction and readers around the country wonder about the future Occupy Wall Street library. It should make for an interesting evening.

‘The Carries Diaries’ Series Confirmed

The rumors about a Sex and the City prequel have been confirmed: CW will adapt Candace Bushnell‘s The Carrie Diaries. The original HBO series’ writer Amy B. Harris has signed up to work on the project.

Past articles reported that producer Michael Patrick King, lead actress Sarah Jessica Parker and co-star Kristin Davis have protested about the project. Judging by the fan reaction on the Twittersphere, there are many skeptics. Who do you want to play young Carrie Bradshaw?

Here’s more from the article: “The first book in Bushnell’s origin story was published last year and, like Sex and the City, is told from Carrie’s point of view. It follows the aspiring writer through her relationship with Sebastian Kydd and rivalry with popular girl Donna LaDonna. The second novel in the series, Summer and the City: A Carrie Diaries Book, was published in April and revolves around Carrie’s first trip to New York. Both books have been big sellers, with Bushnell signing on this summer to pen two additional installments.”

Elaine’s Founder Elaine Kaufman Has Died

Elaine Kaufman, the founder of the famous and literary New York saloon, Elaine’s, passed away today. The 81-year-old restaurant owner hosted some of the city’s best writers since she opened Elaine’s in 1963.

New York magazine had this tribute to the restaurant: “Elaine’s gifts as a hostess were such that her workaday saloon managed to maintain its heat over three decades, from the days when dinosaurs like Tom Wolfe and Lewis Lapham had just hatched to that moment when Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City defined an era of New York social life. ‘You can have a good time there—get incredibly drunk, get out of hand, and nobody bothers you,’ Bushnell opined at the time.”

The party spot starred in the upcoming book, Everyone Comes to Elaine’s
Forty Years of Movie Stars, All-Stars, Literary Lions, Financial Scions, Top Cops, Politicians, and Power Brokers at the Legendary Hot Spot. The restaurant recently appeared in Gay Talese‘s profile of an opera singer in the New Yorker–”Travels with a Diva: On the road with the soprano Marina Poplavskaya.” (Via Kathleen Schmidt)

It’s been a rough year for the glamorous world Candace Bushnell explored in Sex and the City: the stock market crashed, layoffs rocked New York City media world, and the recession crippled the luxury business.

Nevertheless, Bushnell has returned with a new kind of story, a web series promoting a different world–successful, mature women living in a recessionary New York City with laid-off husbands. She wrote ‘The Broadroom‘ for More magazine, and the show debut online this week. GalleyCat visited the glamorous release party in this video, mingling with the show’s stars and getting an introduction to the show from Bushnell herself.

Here’s more about the show from the site: “The four-part series features an accomplished ensemble cast of women including Jennie Garth, Jennifer Esposito, Talia Balsam, Mary McCann and newcomer Lauren Devereux. The webisodes take a humorous look at women in the workplace, addressing everything from breast feeding to rocky relationships to tyrannous male bosses.”
