Three Debut Novelists Score Movie Deals

Writers Veronica Roth, Marie Lu and Erin Morgenstern all landed movie deals for their debut novels.

Roth released Divergent in May; Morgenstern’s book The Night Circus is due out in September and Lu’s title Legend will hit bookstores in late November. Lu sold her book’s movie rights to CBS Films. Summit Entertainment snatched up the rights to Roth and Morgenstern’s novels.

According to Variety, Harry Potter film producer David Heyman is interested in The Night Circus film. Deadline reported that Twilight film producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are looking at Legend. All three authors made an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

CBS Stockholder Deeply Unhappy with Carter Book

The New York Sun’s Gary Shapiro reports that former President Jimmy Carter‘s most recent book, PALESTINE: PEACE NOT APARTHEID has riled up CBS stockholders in a big way. That’s because the book was published by Simon & Schuster – a subsidiary of CBS – and so Carol Greenwald, the treasurer of the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (and a CBS shareholder) plans to criticize the publisher at the meeting.

According to a statement shown to The New York Sun, Greenwald, who calls Carter’s book “error-filled,” plans to ask that a fact-checking system be set up to prevent material errors in books Simon & Schuster publishes and that a code of ethics be adopted for its publishing division. CBS declined comment, but a spokesman said that if the proposal is raised at the meeting, it is expected that the company would reply. The article later weighs the pros and cons of fact checking with a telling quote from journalism professor and critic Steve Weinberg: “Book publishers don’t usually take responsibility for what their authors write because the authors are seen contractually as independent agents.”

What Imus Exit Means for Publishing

The media firestorm continues in the wake of Don Imus‘s firing from both MSNBC and CBS as a result of the inappropriate comment heard round the world, but only now is publishing waking up to one harsh by-product: the loss of what’s become a bona fide sales boost for many a non-fiction writer.

The New York Post‘s Terry Keenan spells things out more clearly with a comment one anonymous agent told her earlier this week: “The Imus impact was worth hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars to the book publishing industry.” PW Editor-in-Chief Sara Nelson agrees with this party line, and points out that “it demonstrates all too clearly how dependent the publishing business has become on celebrity endorsements.” But is Imus’s worth really all that great? Consider North Carolina bookseller Jennifer Beall‘s take in the Talkback section of PW. “Maybe it’s just the places I’ve lived but in 15 years of bookselling I’ve never had a customer who asked for a title because they heard about it on Imus.”
