Her “Night of the Giving Dead” event will benefit the Mott Giving Library, a mobile cart sharing books with patients at the University of Michigan’s C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital. The auction includes two big items: a new Kindle Wi-Fi (along with an eBook of Bad Taste in Boys) and a six month writing mentorship with Harris. Several other items are also up for auction; some have been tailored for readers and others for writers.

Harris’ event was inspired by a similar event organized by YA writer Cynthea Liu. Here’s more: “[Liu's] efforts raised about $15,000 in reading materials for those students [at Oklahoma Title 1 schools]. And when I saw that, I thought, ‘Holy crapsticks. That’s so awesome!’…But what organization to choose? I wanted something to do with books, but I also really wanted to support U of M hospitals. The Giving Library combines the best of both worlds.”

Every time 10,000 Goodreads members add A Visit From the Goon Squad to their shelves, the organization promises to donate 1,000 books. So far, 25,000 members have added the book. If another 5,000 members follow, then Goodreads will provide 3,000 books.

Here’s more from the site’s blog post: “Our initial goal is to donate 5,000 books—which means we need 50,000 people to add A Visit From The Goon Squad by August 2, when the Book Club concludes with a live video chat with author Jennifer Egan. If more than 50,000 people add the book before the end date, we will honor our pledge and donate up to 10,000 books!”

The report examined three particular issues: (1) Did Mortenson first visit the village of Korphe after a mountain climbing trip as he wrote in his memoir, Three Cups of Tea? (2) Was Mortenson captured by the Taliban as he alleged in his follow-up Stones into Schools? (3) Is the CAI carrying out its charitable mission with the money it collects from philanthropists and donors? According to several sources who were interviewed, the answer is “no” to all three questions.

Former CAI donor Jon Krakauer called Mortenson’s first meeting with Korphe villages “a beautiful story” and “a lie.” Mansur Khan Mahsud denied that the Taliban kidnapped the author.  Mahsud appears in a photograph from the alleged kidnapping, but works as the research director of a respected Islamabad think tank.

The press release reports: “School libraries in Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Somalia (Puntland, Somaliland), Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe will each receive 50-100 new and unused copies of each book donated, ensuring that whole classrooms of school children will be able to learn from them. Cambridge University Press has supported Book Aid International for a number of years, but this is the largest single donation to date.”

Since its inception, Book Aid International has supplied 30 million books to developing countries. Every year, approximately 500,000 books are collected and given to sub-Saharan Africa and Palestinian territories.
