Amazon is Testing Same Day Delivery Via Drone

jeffbezos304Charlie Rose interviewed Amazon chief Jeff Bezos on 60 Minutes last night and challenged the mogul about Amazon’s power over smaller players in the book industry. Bezos defended his position saying, “You gotta earn your keep in this world. When you invent something new, if customers come to the party, it’s disruptive to the old way.”

Rose pressed Bezos about Amazon’s power to drive others out of business. To which Bezos replied, “The Internet is disrupting every media industry, Charlie, you know, people can complain about that, but complaining is not a strategy. And Amazon is not happening to book selling, the future is happening to book selling.”

During the interview, Bezos also revealed that Amazon will begin using drones to test same-day delivery. The machines are called “octocopters.” ”These are effectively drones but there’s no reason that they can’t be used as delivery vehicles,” Bezos explained to Rose.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Launches Book Tour with Piers Morgan Interview

Last night, Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia launched his book tour with an interview conducted by CNN’s Piers Morgan. Scalia’s co-author, professor Bryan A. Garner, also appeared to discuss their title Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts.

We’ve embedded one clip above. Here’s more from TV Newser: “While interviews with Scalia are unusual, they are not unprecedented. He has spoken to CBS News and PBS’ Charlie Rose in recent years, and has occasionally been interviewed at events that were broadcast on C-SPAN.”

Follow this link to view clips from last night’s interview. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, Scalia has become the longest-serving justice currently on the Supreme Court. In 2008, he and Garner wrote Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges (2008).

Reynolds Price Has Died

Novelist and Duke University professor Reynolds Price has passed away. He was 77-years-old. Above, we’ve embedded a Charlie Rose interview with the author.

Classics Rock! posted this tribute to the author: “He was known as a prolific writer who produced nonfiction, poetry, plays, essays, and fiction, including the novel Kate Vaiden, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1986. His most recent book was his third memoir, Ardent Spirits: Leaving Home, Coming Back, published in 2009. Less well known is Price’s work as a lyricist: He collaborated on two songs with his friend and fellow North Carolinian James Taylor.”

The site also linked to a number of Taylor songs written by the late novelist, including “New Hymn” and  “Copperline.”

Oprah Winfrey Supporters Won’t Book Kitty Kelley and Her Unauthorized Biography

kitty23.pngIn an interview with the NY Times, biographer Kitty Kelley (pictured) alleged that some of television’s biggest shows would not book Kelley to promote her upcoming unauthorized biography of Oprah Winfrey.

Here’s an excerpt: “In promoting this book, we have already been told by Barbara Walters‘s producer, No, you cannot be on The View, I cannot disrupt my relationship with Oprah. Joy Behar, the same thing. Charlie Rose; Larry King said, I will not do it, it might upset Oprah. Even David Letterman.”

UPDATE: A CNN insider told us this afternoon: “Larry King hasn’t spoken with Kitty Kelley in five years.”

Kelley’s 544-page biography of Winfrey’s life debuts on April 13. Kelley has written juicy books about the Bush family, Nancy Reagan, and Frank Sinatra and many other public figures. In mid-April, mediabistro.com will feature an exclusive Media Beat interview with the biographer about this book. In addition, here’s an old Larry King interview with the author.
