The Eric Carle Museum Unveils Carle Honors Recipients

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art has announced the recipients of the 2013 Carle Honors.

Two-time Caldecott Medalist Chris Van Allsburg has been named the “Artist” honoree. Editor Phyllis Fogelman Baker holds the “Mentor” honor. Children’s literacy advocates Lynda Johnson Robb and Carol Rasco share the “Angel” honor. Author Barbara Bader has been earned the “Bridge” honor.

They will be recognized for their contributions to children’s literature at the September 26th ceremony in New York City.

How Art Can Inspire Fiction

Historical fiction writer Tracy Chevalier gave a TED Talk called “Finding the Story Inside the Painting,” exploring three paintings that inspired her writing.

We’ve embedded the video above–what paintings have influenced your writing?

While writing Girl with the Pearl Earring, Chevalier looked at Johannes Vermeer‘s painting and asked these questions : 1. Does the model love the artist? 2. What type of relationship does the model share with the artist? 3. How was the girl chosen to model in the artist’s studio? 4. Considering her plain clothes, how was the model able to attain the pearl earrings she wears? 5. How does the girl’s love for the artist affect the other characters involved?

Chris Van Allsburg on Picture Book Writing

More than 25 years ago, children’s author Chris Van Allsburg published The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, a collection of 14 mysterious illustrations.

For The Chronicles of Harris Burdick, Van Allsburg teamed up with thirteen fellow writers to create short stories inspired by these drawings. The group of authors include Sherman Alexie, M.T. Anderson, Kate DiCamillo, Cory Doctorow, Jules Feiffer, Stephen King, Tabitha King, Lois Lowry, Gregory Maguire, Walter Dean Myers, Linda Sue Park, Louis Sachar, Jon Scieszka and an introduction by Lemony Snicket.

This powerhouse group of writers has collectively won one Pulitzer Prize, three National Book Awards, five Newbery Medals and several Caldecotts.
