Controversial Vogue Essay Sparks Book Deal

Vogue writer Dara-Lynn Weiss has scored a book deal with Random House’s Ballantine imprint for a controversial memoir about helping her seven-year-old daughter lose weight. The deal sprang from an April Vogue piece that the Jezebel has dubbed “The Worst Vogue Article Ever.”

What do you think? Here is an excerpt from the essay: “I cringe when I recall the many times I had it out with Bea over a snack given to her by a friend’s parent or caregiver … rather than direct my irritation at the grown-up, I often derided Bea for not refusing the inappropriate snack. And there have been many awkward moments at parties, when Bea has wanted to eat, say, both cookies and cake, and I’ve engaged in a heated public discussion about why she can’t.”

The new book has the tentative title, The Heavy. David Kuhn from Kuhn Projects negotiated the deal with Marnie Cochran. The publisher described the book as “an experience that epitomizes the modern parenting ‘damned if you do/damned if you don’t’ predicament.”

According to the release, the book will discuss McCarthy’s journeys to seven exotic locations from the Amazon to Kilimanjaro. Senior editor Alessandra Bastagli negotiated the deal with Kuhn Projects literary agent David Kuhn.

McCarthy had this statement: “Simply put, travel has changed the chemistry of who I am. It has rewritten the internal map of my life and consequently, altered the lens through which I see the world. In my experience, the power of travel to liberate and transform knows no limits.”

Ted Danson Scores a Book Deal with Rodale Books

Ted Danson, the actor immortalized by his role as a bartender in the sitcom, Cheers, will write a book for Rodale Books that takes a “celebratory and cautionary look at the world’s oceans.”

David Kuhn of Kuhn Projects negotiated the deal, and Rodale publishing director, Colin Dickerman, acquired world rights. It is scheduled for winter 2011. Danson helped create the American Oceans Campaign in the 1980s, and has a history of activism in the field. In a meta-fictional twist, Danson now co-stars in “Bored to Death,” a television show written by a novelist about the imaginary life of a writer.

Here’s more from the release: “[In] 1987, while walking along the California coastline with his daughter and seeing a ‘Beach Closed’ sign, that the issue really hit home. Danson was saddened to find himself having to explain that pollution was responsible for the closing of the beach. Since then, he’s made it his mission to ensure that those conversations don’t continue to happen. Written with award-winning journalist Mike D’Orso, Danson’s book represents a culmination of more than two decades of study, activism, and teaching and will provide a decisive, inspiring, and hopeful look at one of the most important environmental concerns of our time.”
