Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to Distribute Amazon Books

Amazon has struck a new deal to distribute its books outside of its popular online store. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s brand new New Harvest imprint will now publish “all of Amazon Publishing’s New York-based imprint’s adult titles in print and distribute them in North America outside of the Amazon.com platform.”

When Amazon Publishing’s East Coast Group launches its inaugural list next fall, it will include books by Tim Ferriss, Penny Marshall, Deepak Chopra and James Franco. Last year Houghton Mifflin Harcourt mounted a major restructuring.

Amazon Publishing’s East Coast Group publisher Larry Kirshbaum had this statement: “Our goal has been, and remains, to introduce authors to as many readers as possible … This new agreement with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt enables us to broaden our distribution and get our books into more readers’ hands.”

This is Trident’s second major deal with Amazon. Last month, Amazon reportedly paid $800,000 for a memoir from Penny Marshall, the Laverne & Shirley star and director.

Trident Media Group Launches eBook Division

Trident Media Group, the literary agency representing Deepak Chopra, Paris Hilton, Jon Stewart, Tori Spelling and a long list of other authors, has launched Trident E-Book Operations.

The new division will “create, manage and implement innovative e-book strategies including the distribution of a variety of e-books directly to a large number of e-tailers in North America and internationally.” In addition, they will consult with authors about everything from digital design to social media to exploring new relationships with “traditional and non-traditional publishers.” Lyuba DiFalco and Nicole Robson have been appointed co-directors of e-book operations.

In the release, Trident chairman Robert Gottlieb explained: “Trident will not become a publisher, but will instead continue in its new e-book operations to have itself aligned with its clients whose interests we serve as an agent and manager.”

Two Promotions at Harper One

harperone.jpgYesterday HarperCollins announced two promotions at the HarperOne imprint. Associate publisher Claudia Boutote was elevated to senior vice president and executive editor Gideon Weil was promoted to vice president.

Boutote had recently worked on the twentieth anniversary edition of Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist” and the eco-friendly edition of the Bible, “The Green Bible.” In a memo about the promotions, HarperCollins Senior VP Mark Tauber wrote that her “creativity, energy and tirelessness in ‘getting it right’ are top shelf and continue to pay off every week.”

Weil had recently supervised a series of novels by Deepak Chopra. In the same memo, Tauber wrote: “His projects include many that continue to backlist very profitably, along with a slate of front list bestsellers.”
