Former Teacher Raising Money for Graphic Novel on Kickstarter

Former high school teacher Vivian Liddell hopes to raise $7,000 on Kickstarter. The funding will help her complete her fictional graphic novel project entitled Dumptruck Baby: The Education of a NYC Teacher.

It will tell the story of a highly-stressed new mother embarking on a career as a New York City public school teacher. Liddell will offer several rewards for supporters including original artwork, hand silkscreened totes, and PDF copies of the finished book. Above, we’ve embedded a video about the graphic novel–what do you think?

Here’s more about the project: “Students, teachers, and administration alike are all examined within the context of their school, but with a nod to the bigger issues at play, such as public policy and lingering racial segregation. The novel takes a humorous look at serious problems, and unravels some of the complicated factors that come into play when a school labeled as “failing” has so much heart.”

Eve Ensler Builds ‘Army of Women’ in Africa

The Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler has opened an educational community called “City of Joy” in the Democratic Republic of Congo–tackling the ongoing problem of sexual violence and rape in the region.

According to The New York Times, the author raised $1 million for the project from V-Day, Unicef, and Google. The video embedded above shows Congolese women building City of Joy’s facilities. Located in the city of Bukavu, the new retreat will shelter 180 women (mostly past victims of rape) every year. Workers at City of Joy will teach about activism, human rights, self-defense, computer operation, and many other subjects. Ensler hopes these women will return to their home towns and serve as leaders.

Here’s an Ensler quote, from the article: “You build an army of women. And when you have enough women in power, they take over the government and they make different decisions. You’ll see. They’ll say ‘Uh-uh, we’re not taking this any longer,’ and they’ll put an end to this rape problem fast.”

Our Virginia: Past and Present Texbook Includes ‘Misrepresentation’ of Civil War History

Fourth graders in a Virginia elementary school were given Our Virginia: Past and Present, a history book claiming that thousands of African-Americans fought as Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

The Washington Post reported: “The author, Joy Masoff, who is not a trained historian but has written several books, said she found the information about black Confederate soldiers primarily through Internet research, which turned up work by members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Scholars are nearly unanimous in calling these accounts of black Confederate soldiers a misrepresentation of history.”

Despite the dissent, Masoff stood by what she wrote. She admitted that the portion in question came primarily through Internet research. In an effort to defend its book, publisher Five Ponds Press sent three of Masoff’s Internet links to the Washington Post.
