The Feminist Press Publishes Pussy Riot eBook

The Feminist Press has been working with Russian punk art collective Pussy Riot on an eBook project entitled Pussy Riot!: A Punk Prayer for Freedom. The title will be available at digital bookstores on September 21st.

Here’s more from the release: “On February 21, 2012, five members of Pussy Riot staged a protest performance in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Three of the performers, Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevitch, known as Masha, Nadya, and Katya, were arrested and charged with felony hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. As their trial unfolded, these young women became global feminist icons, garnering the attention and support of activists and artists around the world. They were sentenced to two years in prison, and inspired a global movement. ”

The book will contain letters written during their imprisonment, courtroom statements, poems and of course, Pussy Riot’s infamous punk prayer. The book will also include tributes written by supporters Yoko Ono, Johanna Fateman, Karen Finley, Justin Vivian Bond, Eileen Myles and JD Samson. Profits derived from book sales will be used to cover the expenses for Pussy Riot’s legal defense team.

According to The New York Observer, they have contacted OR Books about the “super-specialized and targeted” venture.

Here’s more from the article: “[T]he curated site will feature a small number of hand-selected books, including the poet Eileen Myles’s Inferno, published in November 2010…EmilyBooks.com is registered to Ms. Gould; its front page currently features four slots for selling products, occupied by placeholder images of sneakers. ‘Soon there will be content here, and it will not be about shoes,’ reassures the site’s blog.”

Gould has worked as an editor at GalleyCat, an associate editor at Disney’s Hyperion imprint and co-editor of Gawker.
Days of Poetry and Punk Rock

“In the 1970s, the connection between poetry and rock & roll was utter. They were the same people. People who wrote poems were in bands. That didn’t happen again, it seemed to me, until the 90s.” That’s a quote from poet and GalleyCat reader, Eileen Myles.

Since her first 1974 reading at the punk rock mecca CBGB, Myles published more than 20 volumes of poetry, fiction, articles, plays, and libretti. GalleyCat caught up with Myles, talking about the recession and her historic experiences in New York City’s East Village.

The interview came during a poetry reading celebrating the release of “Poems from the Women’s Movement” anthology. GalleyCat also interviewed Erica Jong about the lack of publishing parity, poet Honor Moore about “male approval desire”, and beat poet Anne Waldman about preserving chapbooks in this digital age.

GalleyCat interviewed a number of these poets, getting their thoughts on publishing, feminism, and writing during the recession. More video will follow next week.
