Jake Tapper Lands Book Deal for Afghanistan Reporting

ABC News senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper has landed a book deal with Little, Brown and Company to write Enemy In the Wire about a major battle in Afghanistan.

Geoff Shandler acquired the book from Christy Fletcher at Fletcher and Company. In 2001, Tapper (pictured, via) published Down and Dirty with Little, Brown.

Here’s more about the book, from the release: “[It] will tell the investigative and inspiring story of the 54 US soldiers who were attacked by and ultimately (after more than 18 hours of fighting) prevailed over 300-400 Taliban at Combat Outpost Keating in northeast Afghanistan. Tapper will detail the battle and the soldiers’ heroism and valiant service under fire and tell their stories, those of their loved ones, and those of the eight US troops killed that day. He will also investigate the unusual and compromising geography of the camp — tucked in a vulnerable valley surrounded by three heavily forested mountains near the Pakistan border, and explore the history of the camp within the context of the larger mission in Afghanistan.”

Michael Hastings Sells Book about Afghanistan

Last month journalist Michael Hastings made headlines for his Rolling Stone article “The Runaway General,” a book that ultimately caused President Barack Obama to relieve General Stanley A. McChrystal from his command of the war in Afghanistan.

Hastings (pictured, via True/Slant) sold his book to Little, Brown and Company editor-in-chief Geoff Shandler. The deal was negotiated by Scott Moyers at the Wylie Agency. Hastings is a political journalist and author of the memoir, I Lost My Love in Baghdad: A Modern War Story. In 2007, Hastings’ book proposal generated some controversy online.

Here’s more about the untitled book: “The book will offer an unfiltered look at the war, and the soldiers, diplomats and politicians who are waging it. Based on exclusive reporting in Afghanistan, Europe, the Middle East and Washington, D.C., this landmark work of journalism will elucidate as never before our deeply troubling war in vivid, unforgettable detail.”

NY Times Reporter Lands Seven Figure Deal for Barack Obama Book

NY Times Washington correspondent Jodi Kantor has sold a book about President Barack Obama in a seven figure deal, according to the NY Observer.

Little, Brown won the book in an auction, and the deal was brokered by Elyse Cheney from Elyse Cheney Literary Associates. The article notes that the book will be edited by Geoff Shandler. Most recently, Kantor wrote a long essay for the NY Times magazine about the Obama’s marriage.

Here’s an excerpt, reflecting the reporter’s unique perspective on the Obamas after covering them for three years: “Long before many Americans, Michelle Obama was seduced by his mind, his charm, his promise of social transformation; long before he held national office, she questioned whether he really could deliver on all his earnest pledges. For nearly two decades, Michelle Obama has lived with the president of the United States. Now the rest of us do, too.”
