Blogger To Review Every Bestselling Book of the Year Since 1913

Blogger Matt Kahn has decided to read and review the bestselling book of the year throughout contemporary history, going back 100 years in his quest. Below, we’ve linked to free eBook copies of the first five books on his list…

Kahn will cover 94 books, starting with The Inside of the Cup by Winston Churchill. The site offers the fascinating opportunity to explore major books that are all but forgotten today. Check it out:

For this blog I plan, among other things, to read and review every novel to reach the number one spot on Publishers Weekly annual bestsellers list, starting in 1913. Beyond just a book review, I’m going to provide some information on the authors and the time at which these books were written in an attempt to figure out just what made these particular books popular at that particular time. I decided to undertake this endeavor as a mission to read books I never would have otherwise read, discover authors who have been lost to obscurity, and to see how what’s popular has changed over the last one hundred years. I plan to post a new review every Monday, with links, short essays, and the like between review posts.

Penguin Book Covers Inspire Massive Wall Hanging

Inspired by Postcards from Penguin, a card collection based on classic Penguin book covers, one couple created a massive wall hanging tribute to their favorite books.

The couple posted the entire project on Reddit’s DIY section. In the photo set embedded above, you can explore the entire project from start to finish. Here’s more from the post:

We’re both huge book lovers, so we immediately began thinking of ways to use them in an interesting, decorative way … We tried various layouts, eventually deciding that a shifting color scheme would be the most aesthetically pleasing. We cherry-picked some titles that we were particularly fond of. Among them: The Catcher in the Rye, A Clockwork Orange, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Great Gatsby, and 1984. Among the authors: H.G. Wells, Roald Dahl, Raymond Chandler, and Graham Greene.

Stanza Reader Turns One-Year-Old

Stanza, the digital reader for the iPhone and iPod Touch, turned one-year-old today–celebrating 2 million downloads of the application and more than 12 million book downloads since its launch.

In April, Amazon.com, Inc. acquired Lexcycle, the company that created the Stanza reader. Coincidentally, this GalleyCat editor spent the weekend exploring the Munseys.com category of the Stanza catalog and reading free pulp fiction classics.

Stanza co-founder Neelan Choksi had this statement: “These milestones highlight that many people are quite comfortable reading full length books via Stanza on their iPhones and iPod touch. From commercial titles by Stephenie Meyer and Dan Brown to public domain titles by F. Scott Fitzgerald and H.G. Wells, we are thrilled to learn that Stanza has been partially responsible for a lot of people reading more in the past year than they have in years prior to that.” (Via Kat Meyer)
