At the moment, Zurchin is fundraising on Kickstarter to cover the cost of producing this calendar. Once the calendar has been assembled and marketed, the proceeds will be donated to First Book and Worldbuilders.

Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan & Maureen Johnson Collaborate on Shadowhunters Spinoff

Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare will collaborate on a digital short story series called The Bane Chronicles, working with The Lynburn Legacy author Sarah Rees Brennan and The Name of the Star author Maureen Johnson.

This spin-off series, set in Clare’s “Shadownhunters” universe, profiles the character Magnus Bane. Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint at Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, will publish the first title in February 2013. Each of the ten Bane installments will come out on a monthly basis leading up to the release of The Mortal Instruments film adaptation. In 2014, the publisher will release a single volume containing all ten stories.

Here’s more from Publishers Weekly: “The novelty of this approach is new enough, Galen said, that S&S is having to do some things ‘on the fly.’ Unfamiliar with this type of schedule, which invokes Aaron Sorkin more than Charles Dickens, S&S is, Galen explained, still working out ‘the whole process of delivery, editing, and distribution.’ Also being worked out, albeit in a different way, is how readers will take to this model. Given the growing number of options to deliver staggered content in a quick manner, projects like The Bane Chronicles are cropping up more frequently.”

Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare and The Spiderwick Chronicles author Holly Black have landed a book deal for a five-book middle grade fantasy series.

Scholastic will publish the first book, The Iron Trial, in 2014. Editorial director David Levithan negotiated the deal with literary agents Russell Galen (for Clare) and Barry Goldblatt (for Black).

Here’s more from the release: “In this exciting new series, twelve-year-old Callum Hunt has grown up knowing three rules by heart. Never trust a magician. Never pass a test a magician gives you. And never let a magician take you to the Magisterium. Callum is about to break all the rules. And when he does, his life will change in ways he can’t possibly imagine.”

Holly Black Inks Deal for Vampire Novel

The Spiderwick Chronicles author Holly Black has inked a deal for a YA vampire novel titled The Coldest Girl in Coldtown with Little Brown Books for Young Readers. Black (pictured, via) wrote a short story by the same name for a vampire anthology, The Eternal Kiss.

In her blog announcement, Black emphasized that the vampire tale is “loosely based” on her original short story. She also revealed that this project will be “a single, fat stand-alone book” with a release set for fall 2013. Literary agent Barry Goldblatt negotiated the deal with editorial director Alvina Ling. Ling will edit the manuscript.

Here’s more from the release: “The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is set in the not-so-distant future, where the vampire population has surged, resulting in the establishment of Coldtowns, quarantined cities of vampires and humans where predator and prey coexist in a never-ending blood party of revelry. These isolated meccas of debauchery are the pillars of pop culture, with vlogs, live feeds, and YouTube videos constantly streaming from the endless parties at vampire mansions. Drawn into this bizarre and dangerous world is Tana, who willingly enters Coldtown with an infected ex-boyfriend on the brink of turning and a mysterious vampire with a tortured past intent on seeking revenge.”
