Ira Silverberg to Join Open Road as Strategic Advisor

irasilverbergIra Silverberg, the former Literature Director of the National Endowment for the Arts, has joined Open Road Integrated Media, as Strategic Advisor for Author Brands.

In his new post, which starts April 22nd, Silverberg will be signing on authors and acquiring backlist catalogs. He will report to Publisher Tina Pohlman. ”I have always admired Ira’s love of literature, his generosity of spirit, and his professional integrity,” stated Pohlman. “He cares about writers first and foremost, and brings a backlist savoir faire to Open Road that will be a great asset in our mission to preserve the legacy of the greats in the digital future.”

Silverberg comes to Open Road from NEA where he has worked since 2011. Prior to that position, he held several positions in publishing. He was Editor in Chief of Grove Press, as well as Publisher and Founding Coeditor of High Risk Books, an imprint of Serpent’s Tail. Silverberg also owned a public relations company dedicated to independent literary presses and nonprofit literary organizations. He also served as a literary agent and Foreign Rights Director at Donadio & Olson and Sterling Lord Literistic.

Ira Silverberg Leaving NEA

The National Endowment for the Arts director of literature programs Ira Silverberg has decided to leave the federal agency on July 11, 2013. The former Sterling Lord Literistic literary agent took his current post in October 2011.

Literature program officer Amy Stolls will serve as acting director of literature until a new director is in place. Silverberg joined the NEA in October 2011. He offered offered this statement:

My time here has been nothing but extraordinary. Having had a chance to see, first hand, the various transitions our field is going through — podcasts, e-books, changes in the retail landscape — has been humbling. Helping to guide our field through those transitions has been empowering and has provided me with an education I could find nowhere else. Briefly, the demands of family are such that I must return to New York. This is a bittersweet time for me as I have truly loved the work I do here — and have been aided by a stellar staff.

Finalists Revealed for the 25th Annual Publishing Triangle Awards

The finalists of the 25th annual Publishing Triangle Awards have been revealed.

These awards celebrate the association’s mission “to increase awareness of and appreciation for lesbian and gay literature.” The winners will be announced on April 25th. The awards ceremony will take place at New School University in New York City.

Historian John D’Emilio has been named the winner of this year’s Bill Whitehead Lifetime Achievement Award. This honor also comes with $3,000 prize money. National Endowment for the Arts director of literature Ira Silverberg is the receipient of the Publishing Triangle’s Leadership Award. For the full list of finalists, follow the jump below.

Publishing Leaders Ponder Epic Fall Lists

9781594202247L.jpgWith big novels from Audrey Niffenegger, Thomas Pynchon, Richard Russo, A. S. Byatt, and many, many more big-name writers, the fall 2009 release schedule reads like a contemporary literature syllabus from 2019.

In a short essay, the NY Observer ponders the pros and cons of building this magical list in the middle of a deep, dark recession. If you want to find out more about upcoming titles, GalleyCat interviewed a number of writers about their favorite upcoming books, including a chat with Salman Rushdie.

Yes, Starbucks Has Changed Ishmael Beah’s Life

Josh Getlin at the LA Times follows former child soldier Ishmael Beah around as he signs books in Manhattan, the author’s profile growing in leaps and bounds ever since Starbucks made his memoir A LONG WAY GONE its second book choice. “This all hit me out of the blue,” the modest, soft-spoken writer said to Getlin recently, riding a cab to his first appearance on the tour, in a New York cafe. “I didn’t even know Starbucks sold books. They chose mine, and it changed everything. I wasn’t really prepared.” So far, according to Starbucks, the book has sold 37,000 in its chain stores to date – which matches up with the Bookscan numbers published here last week.

There’s the usual surprise from publishing types like Ira Silverberg (Beah’s agent) and Sarah Crichton (his editor) and some further insight into how Crichton handled the memoir in the wake of the James Frey scandal. The publisher asked Beah to vouch for the accuracy of his book, with its sharp recall of details and conversations. Crichton was willing to take the leap after Beah assured her that he has a “photographic memory.” He reminded her that he had grown up in a culture with a long-standing oral tradition and had learned to tell stories from memory around a fire – and so editing continued. Beah’s book — and his message — are primed for huge national exposure. But will Americans really be able to grasp what he’s been through? “I’m like any other 26-year-old,” the author said with a laugh, minutes before his debut. “A 26-year-old with a Starbucks tour.”
