On April 23, 2013, 25,000 readers will give away a half million books in the United States to celebrate World Book Night. Below, we’ve listed the 30 books they will give away next year.

If you want to give away books to celebrate the event, follow this link to apply to be a book giver. You must apply before January 23, 2013. Novelists Ann Patchett and James Patterson will serve as the honorary chairpeople of the event and the authors have waived royalties for the books. Here’s more about the event:

volunteer book lovers [will] help promote reading by going into their communities and personally handing out specially printed copies to light or non-readers and to those without the means or access to printed books … The 30 World Book Night U.S. titles for 2013, chosen by an independent panel of booksellers and librarians, were also announced. Thousands of copies of each World Book Night title will be printed as special, not-for-resale paperbacks.

Sylvia Day Sells 100,000 Trade Paperbacks in a Week

Formerly self-published romance novelist Sylvia Day has sold 100,000 trade paperback copies of Reflected in You in a single week. The eBook was released in October and has already sold 450,000 copies.

According to Amazon’s new Author Rank feature, Day (pictured, via) is currently the fifth most popular writer on Amazon–alongside publishing giants like James Patterson, John Grisham, Nora Roberts, and Suzanne Collins.

Interestingly enough, romance novelist Jessica Sorensen is currently the sixth most popular author at Amazon. She is the only self-published author to make the top ten most popular authors list, and her new book rocketed to the top of our Self-Published Bestsellers List this week.

James Patterson Leads World’s Top-Earning Authors List

Forbes has just released its annual list of the World’s Top-Earning Authors. We’ve listed the top five writers below, along with their income–follow this link to see the whole list.

In his feature about the list, journalist Jeff Bercovici singled out Suzanne Collins, E.L. James and J.K. Rowling as rising stars on the list. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

At the height of “Fifty Shades” mania, the erotic novels were estimated to be generating as much as $1.3 million per week for their author, E.L. James. And that’s not counting the $5 million she received from Universal Pictures and Focus Films for the theatrical rights. Add it all up and James is assured of a place near the top of next year’s top authors list. (Perhaps “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer deserves a cut of that? James’s books originated as works of “Twilight” fan fiction.)

Tyler Perry Stars in Trailer for Alex Cross Adaptation

Director and actor Tyler Perry stars in the new trailer for Alex Cross, a James Patterson adaptation that features Lost hero Matthew Fox as a brilliant killer.

We’ve embedded the trailer above–what do you think?

Entertainment Weekly has more: “While I think we should all give Perry more than a two-minute chance to prove he’s an action star, I can’t help but watch this and imagine Idris Elba (The Wire, Prometheus) on Fox’s tail. Elba was set to star in the reboot when David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, Pitch Black), was the director, but when QED International became a producer, Perry was cast and director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious and xXx) took over the helm.”

George R.R. Martin Sells One Million Kindle eBooks

George R.R. Martin has sold one million Kindle books. He joins the growing “Kindle Million Club” list with Stieg Larsson, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Charlaine Harris, Lee Child, Suzanne Collins, Michael Connelly, John Locke, Janet Evanovich and Kathryn Stockett.

Kindle Content VP Russ Grandinetti pointed to the author’s most appealing eBook feature: “Martin’s series is simply epic … And an elaborate series like this is great on Kindle because you can turn the last page of book three at 10:30 at night, then buy book four and be on its first page at 10:31.”

Is selling a million Kindle books still a dramatic feat? On Twitter, journalist Sarah Weinman wondered: “at some point it will no longer be news that an author has made it to the Kindle Million Club. That time might even be now.”

This week Forbes published their annual list of the highest paid writers. Novelist James Patterson leads the pack with $84 million–a $14 million increase from last year.

Here’s more from the article: “The jump comes courtesy of a 17-book, $150 million deal Patterson signed with his publisher, Hachette Book Group, in 2009. The peerlessly prolific Patterson, who works with a team of co-authors to boost his output, published 10 of those books during this period. All told, including his backlist, he had an astonishing 20 titles on PW’s year-end lists of bestsellers, comprising more than 10 million copies.”

Like Patterson, Stephenie Meyer and John Grisham write both children’s and adult books; they both made the cut raking in $21 million and $18 million respectively. The authors on the list who write exclusively for children include Rick Riordan, Jeff Kinney, Suzanne Collins and J.K. Rowling. The list included three members of the Kindle Million Club. Below, you can check out the top five authors.

James Patterson Combines YA & Adult Book Trailers

Author James Patterson recently released a novel book trailer: promoting his YA novel and his adult thriller in the same television commercial.

In the book trailer embedded above, Patterson shares the spotlight with an animated version of Middle School, The Worst Years of My Life‘s protagonist . As the video explains, Middle School was written for a YA audience while Now You See Her is an adult thriller.

Many authors write for both young readers and adults. Melissa de la Cruz‘s first adult novel, The Witches of East End, included appearances from characters her Blue Bloods YA series. Meg Cabot recently released Overbite, a sequel to her adult vampire story Insatiable. Last April, she also published the first book in her YA trilogy, Abandon. Who else can follow Patterson’s example?
