Shindig to Host Online Author Chats Live From BEA

Missing BookExpo America this year? You can watch many of the the guests online.

Shindig will be hosting video chats with fifty authors live from BEA. These online conversations will take place from Thursday, May 30th until Saturday, June 1st.

Some of the authors who will take part include The Summer I Turned Pretty author Jenny HanRevenge Wears Prada author Lauren Weisberger, and Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk. The Future of Literary Agents: ‘Publishing Is a Team Sport’

Her first dispatch focused on Jason Ashlock‘s thoughts about the future of literary agents. Here’s an excerpt:

Ashlock, the founder of Movable Type Management, spoke about his three-pronged approach to representing authors in the modern publishing world. First, he suggested that “publishing is a team sport.” He said that the radical mediator agent should not be narrow but should be expansive and looking at any possible intermediaries that will connect readers with authors. He said that agents in today’s marketplace should think of themselves in a business development position, as opposed to a sales positions. He advised thinking about lifespans as opposed to title-by-title marketing.

Publishing for Vision & Hearing Hosts Charity Auction

Literary agent Irene Goodman founded a nonprofit called Publishing for Vision & Hearing (PubVH) in honor of her son, Rob, who suffers from Usher Syndrome.

Currently, PubVH is hosting a charity auction.

Those who are interested can place their bids until the end of December. Some of the items up for grabs include a picture book critique by veteran editor Nancy Paulsen (who now presides over her own imprint at Penguin Young Readers Group) and a partial critique by Movable Type Management co-founder/president Jason Ashlock.

The Art of Rushing Jeremy Lin

Today Timothy Dalrymple landed a book deal with Hachette Book Group’s Center Street imprint to write Jeremy Lin: The Reason Behind the Linsanity. Publisher Rolf Zettersten acquired the book and publication is set for May.

Here’s more from the release: “The book will chronicle Lin’s high school, college and early career in the NBA with particular emphasis on the media explosion surrounding his success as starting guard with the Knicks.  It will explore how Jeremy’s Christian faith, family, education and cultural inheritance have contributed to his success.”

Yesterday, author Alan Goldsher teamed up with Vook to “assemble and publish” Linsanity: The Improbable Rise of Jeremy Lin in a mere 72 hours.

Why I Read Hashtag Makes National Twitter Trend

Today Movable Type Literary Group Jason Ashlock launched a Twitter hashtag with a simple declaration: “Why I Read.” In a surprising twist that should inspire authors and publishers, this hashtag has trended nationally on Twitter this afternoon–counting more than 16,000 responses.

Here’s more from Ashlock: “Today, you’re invited to share why you read. Log on to Twitter, toss down the hash tag #whyIread, and share what continues to draw you to books. We all have our reasons, and we’d love to hear yours. I’ll start. Here’s #whyIread: Novels open up a space for characters to transform; by witnessing that transformation, I am able to change, too.”

Brianne Mulligan Joins Movable Type Literary Group as Associate Agent

mtlg.pngFormer Razorbill associate editor Brianne Mulligan has joined Movable Type Literary Group as an associate agent. At the agency, she will focus on “high concept YA and middle grade fiction” along with a few commercial fiction and nonfiction projects for adult readers.

At the Penguin YA imprint, Mulligan acquired Will Hill‘s upcoming  Department 19 and David Iserson‘s Firecracker. She has also worked at Random House’s Doubleday Broadway and Penguin’s Gotham Books. YOu can follow her work on Twitter as well.

Mulligan had this statement: “I’ve worked inside corporate publishing for my entire career, and I’m very excited to use my knowledge to help authors find success … Movable Type is on everybody’s short list of agencies doing things right, and I’m looking forward to helping them move into juvenile fiction.”

Tumblr Counts A Billion Posts, 7.2 Million Users & Tons of Book Deals

tumblrlogo.jpgToday TechCrunch reported that Tumblr has recorded more than one billion posts. Even more dramatically, the article counted 7.2 million users and 1.7 billion pageviews a month.

To celebrate, we’ve collected some of the book deals coming out of this creative blog network. In January 2010, the Stuff Hipsters Hate Tumblr blog sealed a deal. In that post, agent Jason Ashlock from Movable Type Literary Group explained the appeal of Tumblr book deals.

In April, the Hipster Puppies Tumblr blog inked a deal, we interviewed founder Christopher Weingarten about the “Natural Tumblr-to-Book Ecosystem.”

In May, What I Wore Tumblr blogger Jessica Schroeder scored a book deal.

In July, S*** My Kids Ruined Tumblr blog signed a book deal.

And don’t forget, GQ magazine called for an end to Tumblr book deals earlier this year.

Ads in Books Debate Divides Twitter

mtlg.pngPublishing folk around the Twitter-sphere debated one question all day: Should we put advertisements in books?

The Wall Street Journal touched of the debate with an article about the possibility of advertisements in digital books: “With an integrated system, an advertiser or publisher can place ads across multiple titles to generate a sufficient volume. Timeliness is also possible, since digital readers require users to log in to a central system periodically.”

UPDATE: Reader responses included below. Movable Type Literary Group founder Jason Ashlock started the Twitter hashtag #adsinbooks by writing: “About this advertising in books idea. Is it really that bad? Obv we don’t want it to disrupt the reading experience, but … Isn’t there a way to incorporate select, tasteful adverts that provide revenue, appeal to readers sensibilities?”
