Andrew Goldman Sparks Twitter Controversy in Response to Jennifer Weiner

Over the weekend, novelist Jennifer Weiner wrote on Twitter: “Saturday am. Iced coffee. NYT mag. See which actress Andrew Goldman has accused of sleeping her way to the top. #traditionsicoulddowithout,” criticizing writer Andrew Goldman‘s work in the “Talk” interview column at The New York Times Magazine.

Goldman responded directly to the novelist with this tweet: “sensing pattern. Little Freud in me thinks you would have liked at least to have had opportunity to sleep way to top.” Goldman later characterized his tweet as “absurd,” saying that it was written in the style of comedian Andrew Dice Clay.

UPDATE: Goldman’s account is no longer listed on Twitter. However, he wrote an apology on Twitter later in the day. Weiner accepted his apology and shared it with her readers. The remark generated responses from Gimme Shelter author Mary Beth Williams and New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum. We’ve embedded the complete exchange in a Storify post below (CONTAINS NSFW LANGUAGE)–what do you think?

Jennifer Weiner Analyzes Gender Balance in NYT Fiction Coverage

Novelist Jennifer Weiner has made a count of men and women reviewed by the New York Times last year.

Overall, Weiner (pictured, via) found that out of 254 fiction reviews, nearly 60 percent of the featured books were written by men. Her long essay also counted authors reviewed multiple times by the newspaper. Follow this link to read the whole report.

Check it out: “Finally, of the works of fiction whose authors were reviewed twice (either with two full reviews, or review plus roundup) and profiled, one was a woman and ten were men. The men who received two reviews plus a profile were David Foster Wallace, Albert Brooks, Julian Barnes, Kevin Wilson, Nicholson Baker, Tom Perrotta, Russell Banks, Jeffrey Eugenides, Haruki Murakami and Allan Hollinghurst. The only woman who received two reviews plus a profile was Tea Obreht.”

Jennifer Weiner Releases Haunted GPS Story

Driving home with her GPS last week, author Jennifer Weiner was inspired to write her first ghost story, Recalculating. She published the story today as digital Halloween treat.

It took Weiner five hours to draft the 35 page story about a haunted GPS device. In a matter of two days, the team at Atria Books edited the book and designed a cover. You can find the digital short for 99-cents on Amazon, on B&N and on iTunes.

What do you think? Here’s more about the book: “I was thinking of a darker, more dangerous kind of GPS. And then, I started asking the writer’s big question: why? Why would a GPS want to do a bad, bad thing? Just like that, I had a story. An abused wife. A dead husband who doesn’t want to stay dead. A gift-wrapped box in the attic…and a GPS that starts telling its new owner to make some seriously wrong turns.”

The novelist tweeted her reaction: “Alas: #stateofgeorgia is no more. So grateful to the cast, the crew and the writers for letting me come and play…and to all who watched.”

The show starred Raven-Symone, following the adventures of a young actress and her nerdy friend trying to make it in New York City. Weiner talked about the show in this USA Today interview.

Jennifer Weiner Offers Screenwriting Tips

Author Jennifer Weiner introduced her new novel Then Came You at Barnes & Noble Union Square this week . The novel was inspired by the New York Times article, “Her Body, My Baby: My Adventures with a Surrogate Mom.”

Weiner (pictured) explained how she came to be the co-creator and executive producer for the ABC Family television series, State of Georgia. During her time in Hollywood, she worked closely with the show’s writers.

Weiner also hinted at her current projects. Her next book will star a failed Hollywood producer and she is working on a dystopian tale about infertility (a book reminiscent of The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood). Attendees left with signed books and free whoopie pies.

2011 Tournament of Books Roster Revealed

Today The Morning News announced the roster for the annual Tournament of Books–a round robin competition that pits books against books every March. We’ve listed the complete roster of books below.

A panel of judges will compare these books against each other, eliminating one book each round until there is a winning book. Last year, Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall topped the list.

Here’s more about the contest: “There will be surprises and controversies, upsets and kerfuffles. As usual, we’ll have our color commentators on hand to discuss the decisions, and our Rooster statistician will return to provide analysis and predictions. Then there’s you, the reader. Sometimes you’ll agree with the decisions, sometimes you won’t, and in both cases we hope you’ll voice your opinion in the discussion—which has become, as Salon critic Laura Miller put it last year, ‘a rare pocket of civility and informed intelligence.’”

Do Literary Writers Deserve More Review Coverage Than Bestselling Authors?

Over at the Huffington Post, novelist Jason Pinter interviewed authors Jennifer Weiner and Jodi Picoult about a recent debate about review coverage–do white men get more review coverage than women?

Read the whole interview to join the debate. Earlier this week, we covered Weiner’s Twitter push for Franzenfreude, trying to find literary alternatives to Franzen’s work. The HuffPo post also generated a passionate response from novelist Jennifer Vanderbes (pictured, via Eamon Hickey).

Vanderbes wrote: “Literary writers need review attention. Picoult and Weiner sell enough books so that their publishers can take out ad space when their novels hit stores; places like like Target will automatically stock their hardcovers; this is simply not the case for most literary writers. In targeting Franzen, they found one of the few literary writers who does sell lots of books and probably didn’t even need one NYTimes review.”

What do you think? Read Weiner’s response below…

Jennifer Weiner Leads Franzenfreude Movement

Frustrated with copious coverage of Jonathan Franzen‘s new novel, Freedom, novelist Jennifer Weiner called on Twitter users to create an alternative reading list yesterday.

Mixing “Franzen” and “Schadenfreude,” Weiner (pictured) launched the literary hashtag, Franzenfreude. Here’s the original tweet: “Call for non-Franzen novels about love, identity, families, The Way We Live Now. I pick Anne Tyler’s DIGGING TO AMERICA.”

Lizzie Skurnick wrote: “I hate how little attention [Zoe Heller's] THE BELIEVERS got. Drives me bonkers. Am loving FREEDOM however.” Heidi Ayala added “Sue Miller’s While I Was Gone.” Jennifer Kate concluded: “Just finished Brightest Star in the Sky Marian Keyes, love! [and] Imperfect Birds by Anne Lamott.”

Here at GalleyCat Reviews, we want to know what you think–should book reviews counter-balance Franzen coverage? Publishers Weekly has a good essay rounding up other critics of recent Franzen coverage.

Jennifer Weiner Serializes Story in Redbook

Novelist Jennifer Weiner will be serializing a story in Redbook this summer.

Here’s more about the story: “Part I of the story, entitled ‘The Half Life,’ runs in the magazine’s July issue. Weiner’s fans will devour this juicy beach read: the tale of Piper DeWitt, married, working mother of a four-year-old daughter whose life turns chaotic when her husband leaves, just as she is taking off on a two-week business trip to Paris. As fate would have it, her flight is cancelled and Piper embarks instead on an unexpected adventure … Readers and fans will have to wait until the August issue of REDBOOK to savor the second part of the story.”

As we reported earlier this month, Weiner inked a four-book deal with Atria Books. The deal came 10 years she signed a deal with the publisher for her first book, 2001′s Good in Bed.
