HarperStudio Imprint to Close; Staff Moves to Other Imprints

harperStudioHeader.jpgToday HarperCollins announced that HarperStudio will close, ending one of publishing’s most experimental projects. The final titles will be published in the Summer 2010 list.

Titles scheduled beyond that date will be picked up by other HarperCollins imprints. According to a memo from from Michael Morrison–the company’s president and publisher of U.S. General Books and Canada–the publisher is willing to discuss “profit sharing scenarios on a book by book basis” with authors who appreciated HarperStudio’s unorthodox publishing strategy. The imprint’s publisher left last month, making the imprint’s future uncertain. Last month, Gawker wondered what the change could mean for bloggers with book deals.

Here’s more from the memo: “I’m happy to report that Debbie Stier, Associate Publisher of HarperStudio and Director of Digital Marketing for HarperCollins, will continue in her role as Director of Digital Marketing for the company reporting to Carolyn Pittis. Debbie will also continue to acquire books for all imprints as Editor-at-Large. Kathryn Ratcliffe-Lee will continue to report to Debbie. I’m pleased to announce that Senior Editor Julia Cheiffetz will move to the Harper imprint and report to Jonathan Burnham. Assistant Editor Katie Salisbury will continue to report to Julia. Jessica Wiener will continue as Director of Marketing, reporting to me.”

Marketing Staff Changes at HarperStudio

sarahburningham23.jpgToday HarperStudio announced that associate marketing director Sarah Burningham is leaving. In addition, the imprint will hire publishing veteran Jessica Wiener as their new marketing director.

According to the post, Burningham has left to support her second book, “Boyology.” She is also launching a boutique public relations and marketing firm called Little Bird Publicity. Wiener worked at Hyperion Books, promoting books with Mitch Albom, Randy Pausch, and Candace Bushnell. She will start in September.

HarperStudio associate publisher had these thoughts Debbie Stier, from the post: “I have to say, as someone who’s been in publishing for quite a long time, Sarah’s got the magic: the books are great (and as I always say, it goes back to the book); she’s got a great hook (self-help books for teenage girls by a young woman who’s old enough for the Mom’s to feel comfortable with and young enough for the girls to identify with and look up to); and she lights up like a lantern when the camera turns on. From the moment I saw Sarah do her first television interview, I knew the days of her working in house were numbered.”
