Tracey Garvis Graves Inks 7-Figure Deal

Self-published novelist Tracey Garvis Graves landed a two-book deal with Penguin Group’s Plume imprint, and she said the deal is for “seven figures, a good seven figures.” Fourteen literary agents rejected the book before the author decided to self-publish her debut romance, On the Island.

Since she self-published in March, Graves has sold 340,000 copies of the book and broke into the New York Times bestseller list. Literary agent Jane Dystel negotiated the deal with executive editor Jill Schwartzman.

Here’s more about the book: “It centers on Anna Emerson, a thirty-year-old English teacher who accepts a summer job on a tropical island. There, she’ll be tutoring sixteen-year-old T.J., who is behind on his schoolwork because of cancer treatments. But as they fly over the Maldives, their plane crashes into shark infested waters. They manage to get to shore, but find themselves stranded on an uninhabited island with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. As weeks become months, the castaways encounter many obstacles including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the looming possibility that T.J.’s cancer could return. But as their bond grows stronger with each passing birthday, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.”

Glee Star Jane Lynch Lands Book Deal for Memoir

Glee star Jane Lynch has inked a deal to publish a “funny and inspirational memoir” with Hyperion’s Voice imprint. Mel Berger at William Morris Endeavor represented the book and editorial director Barbara Jones acquired the book in an auction. Jill Schwartzman will edit the memoir.

Happy Accidents will come out in September, following the arc of the actress’ career–from her time in The Second City comedy group to her work in Christopher Guest mocumentaries. It will also explore how “embracing her sexuality helped her find both personal and professional joy.”

In the release, Lynch (pictured, via) had this statement: “If I could go back in time and have a conversation with my 18-year-old self, the first thing I’d say is, ‘Lose the perm.’ Second, I would say, ‘Relax. Really—just relax. Don’t sweat it.’ For a long time, I was anxious and fearful that the parade would pass me by, and that someone or something outside myself had all the answers. Having finally reached a happy place—a happy accidents place—I want to share my story with others, to let them know things aren’t as bad as they fear.”

Author and blogger Christian Lander has inked a deal to publish Whiter Shades of Pale: The Stuff White People Like from Coast to Coast from Seattle’s Sweaters to Maine’s Microbrews with Random House Trade Paperbacks.

William Morris Endeavor agent Erin Malone negotiated the deal with senior editor Jill Schwartzman. The book will come out this fall. Back in 2008, Lander’s big book deal for Stuff White People Like raised eyebrows–but the title had a good run at the bookstore. Lander (pictured, via) is now working as a staff writer on MTV’s animated series, Good Vibes.
